WE WERE VISITING HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE FROM CHICAGO LOOKING AT RETIREMENT PROPERTIES WHEN WE DECIDED TO CHECK OUT THE LOCAL SHOPS. WE VISITED THE DOGWOOD TREE WHERE THE OWNER OF THE ILL FATED ESTABLISHMENT "TOWERY" (FROM ARKANSAS OF ALL PLACES) WAS THE RUDEST PERSON I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. WE ARE A BLACK AND HISPANIC COUPLE, WORTH MORE THAN I'M SURE THIS STORE OWNER WILL EARN IN HIS LIFE. I'M AN ONCOLOGIST IN UPPER ADMINISTRATION FOR A CANCER TREATMENT CENTER AND MY SPOUSE IS A CORPORATE TAX ATTORNEY IN THE GREATER CHICAGO AREA.
UPON ENTERING THE HALLMARK STORE, THIS BIGOT "TOWERY" MADE HIS PRESENCE KNOWN BY "HOVERING OVER OUR EVERY MOVE" AND ASKING SEVERAL TIMES "CAN I HELP YOU FIND ANYTHING" AND "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR." ONCE WOULD HAVE BEEN SUFFICIENT, BUT WE KNEW WHAT HIS MOTIVES WERE. WE DID NOT FIT THE APPROPRIATE "COLORS" TO BE SHOPPING IN HIS STORE. SHORTLY AFTER THIS BANTER I OVER HEARD HIM TELLING AN OLDER LADY WORKING BEHIND THE REGISTER TO "KEEP AN EYE ON THEM." I TOLD MY HUSBAND WHAT I HAD HEARD TOWERY SAY, AND HE STATED MAYBE WE SHOULD GO SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE, PREFERABLY SOMEWHERE LESS INTOLERANT.
THE FINAL STRAW CAME WHEN I THEN NOTICED THERE WAS A LLADRO PORCELAIN FIGURINE I WAS INTERESTED IN IN A LOCKED GLASS CASE. I ASKED THE LADY BEHIND THE REGISTER IF I COULD EXAMINE THE PIECE. SHE WENT AND RETRIEVED TOWERY TO ATTEND TO OUR NEEDS, WHOM WAS QUICK TO INFORM US IT WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE PIECE AND WE PROBABLY SHOULD NOT BE HANDLING IT. HE THEN WALKED AWAY AND WENT BACK TO THE POSTAL AREA WITHOUT MAKING THE SALE.
I WAS FLOORED AT HIS RUDENESS AND WE PROMPTLY LEFT. MY HUSBAND ALMOST WENT BALLISTIC OVER HIS ASSUMPTION THAT I COULD NOT AFFORD THE $296 LLARDO. WE SHOULD HAVE JUST LEFT FROM THE BEGINNING, AND YOU SHOULD NEVER, EVER VISIT THE DOGWOOD TREE AT HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, AR. FYI, WE DECIDED AGAINST RETIRING IN ARKANSAS. OUR REALTOR, BOBBIE GREEN FROM LAKE HAMILTON REALTY WAS EQUALLY AS RUDE AND RACIST, BUT THAT'S ANOTHER STORY FOR RIP OFF REPORT.

It doesn't have to be in Arkansas, it doesn't have to be in some small shop and it doesn't have to be in a small town. Years ago, my South Western Bell yellow pages rep, who's black , makes a ton of money and is married to an ex-pro ball player went into what was probably the most expensive jewelry store in San Antonio. She was looking for a gold Rolex watch. It was a Saturday, so she was dressed in blue jeans and a tee shirt. These morons have an off duty cop as security and they had her followed all through the store. It was pretty obvious what the cop was doing. He "tailgated" her all through the store. She was so pissed off, she came and bought the $10,000 watch from me. WHY anyone would WANT to retire in Arkansas is beyond me.

I am a white male in Arkansas and I stay amazed at how back woods this place can be. I do advise you to stay away from anything near Hot Springs. The locals still think it is 1890 and don't care to learn better.
I employee black drivers and have to be careful not to send one to certain areas of the state after dark. Heck even my white drivers have ONLY been pulled over for anything when they have blacks in the car.
I owned a restaurant in Hot Springs and the landlord had a fit that I offered low prices on kids buffet, ($2.99) He flat out told me that the low prices would bring blacks in and he did not want blacks in his hotel lobby, Needless to say, I no longer rent from The Springs Hotel and Spa,
And what is even sadder is the blacks hate the blacks around here.
