Well here's the story. Incredibly, Road Loans wants us to buy this.
On July 27th 2006, I mailed a complete payoff, a check for 7800+ dollars, to the payoff address at 5505 N Cumberland Ave in Chicago. I called Road Loans first to confirm that this IS the payoff address.
It is August 7, and we are still receiving daily phone calls, both at home and on my cell at work, asking about payment. They claim they don't have it, even though every bill I mailed that same day from an Army post office has cleared my account. They asked me to trace the check. How? It has not cleared! Another "solution" is to pay over the phone. No, not when there is a check on someone's desk in Chicago. They told my husband that there are three offices, one in Chicago, one in Caligornia, and one in Texas, and that it takes sometimes "two weeks" to get a letter. Oh, and when we asked for the number in Chicago to see where that payment is, we were told they HAVE NO PHONES at that office!!! My husband said then, "So, you cannot communicate with anyone at the payoff office, how do you know it was not received then?" No answer.
My husband is active duty Army, and we are going to get a JAG (military lawyer) and if possible, go public about this company ripping off military members, racking up late fees and interest, and basically not WANTING us to pay this car off.
It's funny how payments arrive, late quite often, but do arrive, but when you pay it off, the payment is "missing."

Well, my check finally reached someone, BUT, it's still not resolved.
I owed 7853.76 on the car. I mailed a check for full payoff.
They say I still owe 800.00. I called to ask why, and they acknowledged my check but said it was only for 7053.76.
?????
So now I have to wait for my credit union to get the check, and have them look at it.
Road Loans said something like, "Gee, someone must have entered the amount in wrong. Have your bank fax us a copy so we can see what the amount was for."
Mmmm-hmmm.
I told Road Loans I will NOT pay interest on this.
I think I know what amount I wrote the check for, it's in my register, plus you write the number amount and then write it in words.
I'd call, but they have no phones in the Chicago office!

Rather than go through this misery and have this adversely impact your credit, why don't you stop payment on the check and ask for a certified check from your bank?
The ONE (sadly) time I paid off my car, I got a payoff amount, the payoff address, and a certified check for the amount of the payoff.
I wouldn't wait another minute. Pay the $30 stop payment fee and get them a certified check.

A Relatively Quick Fix

Was this a cashiers check? If so, you have proof that the cashiers check was issued and the date it was issued. Take a copy of that document to the bank and have them put a stop payment on the check. Make copies of the cashiers check (showing original purchase date), the stop payment paperwork, and the new check, and send them CERTIFIED MAIL, return receipt requested to them, along with a letter requesting waiver of penalty and interest from the date you mailed the original check.
If this was a personal check, do the same thing, stop payment and reissue the check.
It's quicker and easier to start over than to argue with them that the check is on someone's desk.

Road Loans, 2 weeks after mailing payoff, is still harassing me and claiming they have never received it. They also still maintain that the Chicago office, where they told me to send payoff, HAS NO PHONES.
I have mailed a complaint to the NC Attorney General.
The check has not cleared the account, yet Road Loans says, "Check your bank to see if someone else cashed it." How will the bank trace it if it has not cleared? How can the post office possibly track a letter either?
Meanwhile, my credit goes down, the late fees and interest charges pile up......
Everytime I email someone there, I get a standard email, "We cannot help you, contact one of our Customer Service Reps at 800-blah blah." These are the same idiots who don't even work out of Chicago and have no idea what's going on, most sound like they are 18 years old.
