Just over an hour ago I received a call from "Travel Agents Direct", I knew from the start it was some sort of a scam, first of all they called me on my cellphone, but I wanted to play along and find out as much as I could online while I have them on the phone asking them to repeat over and over their "promotion".

A quick google search for "travel agents direct" found plenty of info assuring this was some sort of scam:

the prize they were trying to push was something like this:
they said that I had purchased something with my checking card from one of their clients but they didn't confirm when and what was the purchase made, regardless, I let the woman (April Black as she identified herself) continue with her pitch, according to "Travel Agents Direct", I was selected to receive a "travel package" and a complimentary $100 on gasoline and $400 on airline ticket coupons.

The $100 could be redeemed in any gas station in USA, but wasn't able to confirm for if there was any gas company involved or how this actually works, just kept saying there were coupons, same for the $400 airline ticket coupons, also supposedly redeemable on any airline for any travel within USA, but didn't name any airline.

As we carry on, and she said the only thing needed was to confirm if my account with BofA was still open, somehow they knew my address and routing number and read it back to me and ask to confirm, and then ask me to give her my acct number, at this time I wanted to find out what they were this was leading up to, and demanded to get a Customer Service or a manager, they gave me a 800 number. so I put her on hold and called this number and also check it online. When I called I didn't get an answer from "Travel Agents Direct" but to some call center or something that somehow managed several promotions at the same time I have found enough information online regarding this particular scam and the complaints they have under their umbrella company called SUNTASIA MARKETING.

At this time I was convinced on my first impression that this was definitely a scam, and went back to the woman I put on hold. kept her on the phone and I was absolutely sure she was not going to get any bit of information from me, but instead I was up to make her call the most annoying and impossible sell she had at least today, I tried to get the information from here regarding what airlines the tickets would be from, but she couldn't confirmed, also as part of the package were coupons on restaurants, but she couldn't name any and mentioned it was tailored to the area I live on.

Needless to say it was a pure scam, beware of any telemarketing offering these kind of deals.

address & bank routing code

AUTHOR: Bob - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 08, 2006

Your address was easy to get, especially if you have it listed anywhere (phone, county records, etc.). And these scammers pick the largest bank in your area and use the routing number of that bank to try and convince you they know your account number, but they don't. The routing number simply identifies the bank, it does not identify an individual account, and that is why they asked for your account number.

Good for you for keeping the person calling on the line and asking questions - the more time you take the less time they will have to scam another person. And the old rule that people fail to follow everyday is, NEVER, never give out your bank account or credit card number to anyone on the phone or internet UNLESS you call them and even them be careful.
