Initially, my counselor provided me with financial numbers I could live. I had the max number of transferrable credits from obtaining my AA degree. Expensive as it seemed, the convenience initially seemed a good trade-off.
A few months into my classes, matriculation began telling me "this class won't transfer, that class won't transfer"...you get the idea. I had begun taking taking ground classes which seemed to be working out. Six months into this debacle, my husband and I moved to a remote mountain community; because of the commute and the dangerous weather conditions, I began online classes.
Suddenly, my original financial agreement took on a life of its own. Online classes were more expensive, online "textbooks" cost more. Tuition kept increasing and to avoid the increase, I began omitting the week break betweer classes, so for over a year, I took back-to-back classes.
When I had completed three-quarters of my BA, I suddenly had to come up with out-of-pocket money every other class. I also filed a Student Appeals Request to overlap several classes as I was carrying a 3.87 GPA; these requests were turned down...I feel because UoP would be losing money. At that late date, I was bound & determined to finish & I did. But all I have is a $20,000+ student loan, a piece of paper on the wall, and not enough practical knowledge to obtain a job in Health & Human Services Management.
I have documented all of the many financial & academic counselors, their lousy, rude & disrespectful attitudes...I have documented everything! I had no idea that there were so many similar complaints about UoP...this means that it's not just my perception. I have read that several of you are interested in pursuing a class action lawsuit...count me in, please. Tonight is the first time I have ever seen this website, so I'm unfamiliar as to how we might communicate. My information is here...please share your experiences with me. At 52 years old, I feel that earning a BA should have put me in a more advantageous position in the job market, but it has not. I am no more prepared than I was before I began this "educational financial adventure."

Ditch the class action idea and hire your own attorneys
AUTHOR: Tim - (U.S.A.)

Speaking as an attorney who has worked on a couple of class action cases, I have found that such lawsuits generally benefit the attorneys involved FAR more than the plaintiffs/consumers.
Class actions are great in the following circumstances: 1) a large number of people have been damaged in an individually small manner (i.e. the case where Progressive Insurance ran unauthorized credit inquiries on millions on consumers); 2) where a cohesive group of people have been significantly damaged (i.e. that one Julia Roberts flick, the name of which I can't remember); and 3) where the plaintiff's involved are more concerned with vindication than a monetary award.
Otherwise, don't expect to get much, as an individual, out of a class action lawsuit. The legal fees are MASSIVE, especially when the defendant has in-house counsel or significant monetary resources (i.e. UoP). These cases usually resolve to a settlement agreement that gives the lawyers an awful lot of money, and the indivdual consumer very little.
My advice is to hire your own attorneys, preferably on contingency, and file individual lawsuits. In the least, see if you can find an attorney that will give you a free initial consultation. You may have solid claims for breach of contract, education malpractice, etc. I just don't feel that a class action is in the best interest of people lodging the kind of complaints that I'm seeing here.

Class action lawsuit against the University of Phoenix
AUTHOR: Leah - (U.S.A.)

Hi Kim -
I am sorry for your miserable experience with UoP. I am one of the many that have had a horrendous time with the University of Phoenix and am very interested in joining a class action lawsuit, however, I am not particularly certain where to begin either.
Please read my report on this website (report #305810, listed with the University of Phoenix; Honolulu Campus) to get an idea of my background. If you (and anyone else reading this) would like to respond to my report, perhaps we can organize a class action lawsuit? I will respond to others on this site that may be interested in filing a class action lawsuit - what this institution has done to all of us inexcusable. The DOE (or someone) should be held accountable for allowing this foolishness to continue under the guise of a higher learning establishment.
Good luck and Thanks - Leah

Colleges are becomming money pits!

I'm sorry to hear about your expensive adventure! I also feel I got scammed by a profitable Private school, University of Advancing Technology. After completing my Associates there I wanted to leave but then found out I couldn't transfer credits anywhere and would have had to start from scratch if I went to a regular university. I wanted to leave because I was paying over $1000/ class. Long story short I stayed and got my bachelors degree for $50,000. Like you and everyone else that graduates from these schools I felt like they didn't teach me jack sh*t. I felt like I spent a but load of money to teach my self what they were supposed to teach me.
Thankfully I was smart and got a job before graduating and have had a solid career in my field but others aren't so lucky. You should find the job placement percentages on your school to show how poor their educators and curriculum's are. I know when I graduated I was 1 of the 10% of the graduating class that had a job... It's so sad that colleges are taking advantage of more people everyday. They making education difficult for those who want to be successful. BTW I pay over $500 in college loans every month, OUCH!!!!!
This kind of stuff needs to STOP! I wish you the best of luck and hope you sue the crap out of them!!!!!

If you are going to do a degree online

Many state universities and not-for-profit private schools now offer many degrees all online. If you want to do an online degree, go with them, avoid these rip off for-profit schools like Kaplan University, University of Phoenix, Capella Universtiy, AIU-Online, and so on.
Kim I am sorry you had to go through this. I do hope you will be able to pick yourself up and move on from this nightmare.
I truly hate for-profit online universities. They really are out to get people and take advantage of them all for a large profit.
