My wife and I have a joint account and I have a separate account with Univest. We also have our mortgage through them. On my personal separate account, I received a letter stating I am limited to a $250.00 spending limit. I didn’t think anything of it, as on the joint account we had received no such letter.  Today , Saturday July 26th I tried to make a flight reservation with a total ticket price of $350.00, I get a denial from the airlines stating that the card was denied.

Now I am scrambling to a) find another flight to see my sick mom and 2) find out why I cannot access my own money from my account.  To boot they have something called 24/7 banking by phone but it really isn’t 24-hour service or even service on a Saturday that extends beyond 1pm. Therefore, I am screwed because Univest feels fit to tell me how much of my money I can spend at a time.

Our joint account is not an option as we are paying bills through it as well as shopping. Credit Cards we are trying to avoid using because of the outrageous interest rates everyone now has on cards.

There are a couple of things to figure out.   What specifically did this letter state, was it talking about your daily transaction limits or something like an overdraft amount?

If it was talking about your daily transaction limits was that $250/per transaction, $250/per day, did it include only on-line transactions or was it all types?  What was the reason they gave you?  As many times when a bank does this it is because they susupect fraud on your account(not fraud by you..but by someone getting your number), and they will put this temporary limit into place until they send you a new card.

However, if this was a new limit on the amount they would allow you to "overdraft" that is something 100% different.  That means that this is a case where you don't have the money in your account and in reality are trying to spend "their" money.  In this case they are just saying that they are no longer going to allow you to spend their money and the reason you would have gotten declined is because you don't have $350 in your account.

Now, just a few things.   If by chance you truly did have enough, why didn't you try the other one even if it is for "bills".  As you could have made the purchase, and then done a transfer between the accounts.  Also, if you did have a credit card..same thing.   Make the purchase on the CC and them immediatly turn around and make the payment.  It should still be within a grace period, but even if not the couple of days it would have taken to do that would have been at most about $2 in interest.
