Vivint Alram renewed my contract for 1 year even after receiving a 30-day cancellation notice prior to the end of my contract.  They have the notice on file but insist I owe them one more year, because written notice apparently isnt good enough to cancel.  Let's see...written notice 30 days prior to the end of the contract term isn't good enough.  Right.


I spoke with their account relations department and they assured me my account would finally be closed if I only paid them X more months. 

Me: "OK, so now my account is really CLOSED right?" 

Vivint: "Yes."

Then more bills from them and they again say...we can close your account if you only pay these X months.

Me:  "I've heard this before from the last agent who called and I'm not buying it."

DO NOT do business with them.  They are unscrupulous, unethical and shady.

Cancellation notice

Contract expired in June, cancellation notice was sent in May, 30 days prior to exipration.  No new agreements were signed or agreed to.  Their customer service rep acknowledged that they had the cancellation notice in their file.

1.) Did your contract expire after June or July of 2011?
     a.) If your contract was up BEFORE June or July of 2011 your contract was auto-renewed and would be
          in the fine print of the contract... Nothing you can do about that.
     b.) If your contract was up AFTER June or July of 2011 then it's illegal to auto-renew it for anything
          outside of 30 day terms... Basically, after your initial contract term is up you automatically go
          month to month, or they company would have to give you the option to resign or discontinue.

2.) Never believe anything cancellation departments tell you, they're better liars than politicians. Always
     request copies of anything you supposedly signed. Another big trick a lot of security companies use is
     service calls... Beware of "free" service calls, upgrades, etc, unless you have a warranty that you pay
     for every month- The technician gets the customer to sign the, "work order" for the, "free" work/etc
     but if you read the fine print it's actually agreeing to resign for another X amount of years (usually 3-5)
     and very rarely will this be disclosed to the customer, they just think they're signing off that the work
     was done.

3.) I always help my customer with their cancellation process, mostly because I've been doing this for
     years and help people get passed the companies typical cancellation BS ("oh, you still have X amount
     of time left, etc"- NEVER believe anything they tell you, always ask to see copies of EVERYTHING,
     and when you send them something like a cancellation notice send it certified mail with a signature
     required at the time of delivery and a return receipt so they can't lie and say they didn't get it. If I
     were you I would request the money you paid them back and threaten them with the BBB, FTC,
     etc, and see how quickly their tune changes.
