The week of July 20th, 2006, the Landlords of Mark 4 Realty in Gulfport, Mississippi ripped up and removed the entire complex's mailboxes (which were the resedential, non-locking boxes not appropriate for an entire apartment complex). They did this without sending any notice to any of their tenants whatsoever. I have signatures along with telephone numbers of the other tenants as well as their statements regarding the fact that none of them recieved any notice from the Landlords either. I also have pictures of the demolished mailboxes lying in the ditch WITH ALL THE MAIL THAT WAS ONCE INSIDE, NOW SPILLING OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE. People's identities could be stolen. If anyone had social security checks in the mail, they did not recieve them. Important bills and information did not reach their intended destinations. People's medical information is lying out for all to see.
As my husband and I took pictures of the sprawling mail, and collected signatures for the postal inspector, the Landlord spotted us and proceeded to call the police. I thought this was rediculous, as I though she was clearly in the wrong for tampering with a whole apartment complex's mail!
But it seems that in this great country we call the United States, you can to whatever the hell you like if you have enough money; screw what the written laws actually do say!
The Constable promptly served us with court papers saying that we were a month late on the rent, and had to appear in court within three days!! WHAT!!??
My husband and I even showed the cop on our lease when the rent was due, and on paper anyway, it said that we pay our rent on the first of every month. July was paid already, we have the recipt in hand!! The first of August wasn't for another twelve days!! The Constable just shrugged his blue-clad shoulders and said, "Well, y'know. I gotta do what I gotta do."
Three days later my husband has to be at the couthouse (Justice Court Judicial 1, 1620 23rd Avenue, Gulfport, MS. 39502-0000, [1-228-865-4203]) to be exact, at precisely 9:00 AM or else the case will be thrown out. Yoshi Leci recieved special treatment because they allowed her to saunter in drunk as an Irish skunk around 12:30 PM. My husband missed an entire day of work because of this, and we're not rich people, so, it hurt.
When my husband tried to point ount the pungent odor of alcohol, and the woman's staggering all over the place, the Judge ("Honorable" Judge Melvin Ray(e)) threatened to have him arrested.
When my husband tried to present all of the information we had collected in black-and-white, and full color photos of the distructed mail-filled mailboxes, our lease and recipts proving the rent was NOT due till August 1st, the Judge waved his hand and stated "She's the Landlord, she can throw out anything she wants. I don't need to see anything else. Pay her $600.00 plus the court fees by tomorrow or you will be locked without your possessions out of your current place of residence." That was the end of it. We're out $710.00 for rent thay wasn't even due yet, and we still have to come up with August's rent because we were "legally obligated", I guess, to pay July's twice. Both of which we have recipts for.
After we paid her her blood money, we thought the nightmare was over. I guess her little day in court gave her an ego-boost because not 24 hours after we had paid her off, she was back with a new claim for money.
The brochure for this particular apartment complex has printed in black and white that a flat pet fee of $200.00 is required to have pets in the apartments. IT DOES NOT SAY $200.00 PER PET. Some of the complexes listed do specify 'per pet', but Mark 4 Realty DOES NOT!!! It is also listed in our lease that it is a flat rate and does not say PER PET. We paid the said amount back in October when we moved in and signed the lease. We had four pets then, (2 small dogs, and 2 little ferrets) and we have the same four pets now. This was not a problem when we signed the lease back in October. The Landlords saw, and even interacted with all four of them, so they cannot say that we just "snuck" them in. Ever since the court date in July, however, she has been trying to scare us into paying two-hundred dollars a pet. "You pay me, or I'll take you to court again. You don't want that, do you?" or, "Pay me or you'll be sorry." or, "No money,no place to stay. You can't win, I can make you pay whatever I want, whenever I want." or, my personal favorite, "I can make your rent a thousand dollars so you can't pay and you WILL be out."
The last time I checked, this was called EXTORTION!!! The Mafia likes to employ this little technique when taking over flower shops and laundromats, and the like. She has been harrassing us for two weeks nonstop about this money that WE HAVE PROOF THAT WE DON'T OWE HER!!! We've tried to call the cops, the housing authority, along with the senators' and Mayor's offices, and no one has enough balls to take this woman on.
Are the working class people in the U.S.A. really doomed to suffer this kind of abuse without any justice or retribution?? If so, my American a*s will gladly go crawling on my hands and knees back to merry, old England!!! (Sorry, President Jefferson, I'm afraid your worst nightmare has finally come to pass). :(
