I have been a member with Farm Bureau of Tennessee for many years and have always had my auto insurance with them. Recently, my son was staying with me short term and his car broke down. Trying to do the right thing, I contacted my insurance agent in the Kingston Springs TN office and asked if I could add my son for just a month, since he would be moving out in 3-4 weeks. I just wanted to cover him in case he needed to use my car. I was told that due to some issues with his driving record, they would not be able to add him. I said ok and let it go. A few weeks later, I received a letter in the mail from Farm Bureau stating they were cancelling my policy because it was too risky to continue my coverage with my son staying in my home. By this time, my son had moved out. I again called my agent and told him that my son had moved out of my house. I was told that I could not have my insurance reinstated until I sent a copy of my son's driver's license and a copy of his insurance card to them. I don't see how a company can just cancel your policy under suspicion of someone else other than yourself driving your car.

Parental responsibilities

As far as admitting he was under his father's roof, yes I agree with you. But when do you account for the responsibility of the parent here to deny his son access to his car? Just because he lives in the same house for a few weeks does not mean he was driving his father's vehicle. I have stayed an extended period of time with my parents in the past and if they said I could t drive their vehicles , I didn't drive them. Personally, I feel the insurance company went too far by cancelling the policy. And now they are asking for proof that he is no longer there? I'd go with another insurance company myself.

You admitted he was staying under your roof. It is a fact younger people have a preponderance of at fault collisions. As such, you increased their potential liability. With proof of him having his own insurance eliminates that potential increase of their liability. No, I don't work for them.
