In 2020, I bought roughly 3000$ of parts to have my 2012 gti vw engine rebuilt to use as a track car. After close to 3 years in january of 2023 they finally finished it after many calls and arguing. It was then transported to my main mechanic who finished the job of upgrading the rest of the engine with all new parts. Due to waiting on parts it took awhile to get it fully running.

In december of 2023 we discovered an oil pressure issue and had to have it towed back to them as luckily it was still under warranty for 1 year. The issue was the cam position sensor which should have been replaced in the rebuild. Once this was fixed under warranty we finally had the car running and got the engine broken in. But it continued to have an oil pressure issue.

After putting approx 3-440 miles on the engine it began to misfire and blow large amounts of white smoke from the tailpipe. A compression test was done and cylinder 3 was bad. It was then towed back to tachyon and they diagnosed it as an oil clearance issue in cylinder and advised it would need another complete rebuild. Also all the forged internals like pistons etc will need to be replaced so I will be out another 3k for this.

Due to it being a few months over warranty they will not repair this and want to charge me another full price for a rebuild. It may have been over a year but it was literally only weeks that the car was running. The bottomline is they failed to build this engine appropriately and did not measure correctly to allow enough oil clearance.

the car was not driven after the oil pressure issue started, it was towed to the shop. we got it back after they said it was fixed, it was again driven until oil pressure issue started again and again shut down and towed to the shop. Bottom line is that it took almost 3 years to get the engine back, and it was not done properly. Dont agree to a job that you dont have the skills to complete with accuracy.

As I said, it was taken in for this issue and they thought they fixed it. said it was a sensor. After this and a tune, as soon as it showed low oil pressure it was taken into theirt shop tore down and the true problem diagnosed.

Camshaft position sensor?

A camshaft position sensor would not cause an oil pressure issue. It would either cause the engine to not run, or it would throw a check engine code. There is also absolutely no reason to replace it if it's not defective. It's an electronic part that has no moving parts and does not wear out. I also don't know why it would take months to fix this, it's a straightforward bolt-on part. An oil pressure problem after a rebuild is an indication that something is seriously wrong, and the engine should not have been run at all, much less driven hundreds of miles.

Several Problems Here

AUTHOR: Irv - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, May 27, 2024

First off...NOTHING HAS CHANGED in regards to writing dollar amounts. Only the illiterates of this generation write dollar amounts as "3000$". Grade school teaches us the amount is $3000. Stand above the rest and make a better impression. You will be better off because of it. If you took this to small claims Court and I represented them, here are the defense points for their case. First, you admitted here the engine had oil pressure problems yet you continued to run it. Oil pressure problems don't heal themselves and a reasonable person who knows as much about engines as you appear to do, would know to NOT continue to run the engine if oil pressure is not within specifications. Low oil pressure, without regard to any other matters, shows there is a problem and that was enough to trigger warranty coverage repair at that time.. However, the engine is now past warranty and as such, there is no free warranty service, nor are they obligated to provide free warranty service as a courtesy. If you dragged your feet seeking warranty coverage for the low oil pressure problem, that's entirely your fault. If they delayed to provide free warranty service when you made a formal request for said coverage when coverage was in effect, then and only then would it become a viable case on your part in SCC.
