Received an email today threatening to make a federal lawsuit against me for a supposed loan of $980.76 which I know I've never had. Regardless I just declared a chapter 13 in 2015 so I know for sure I do not owe anyone anything! They threatened to get a federal investigator and to notify all credit bureaus yet gave no specifics on who the loan was with, the loan number or any other specifics.

Good thing you haven't sent them any money. This is a very long running scam. If you search here on this site you will see that this scam has been reported for years by various consumers. The tip that it is a scam is the email requires a quick response, generally the same day. Another tip that it is a scam: the English grammer is poor in the emails with non-sensensical legal terms used in the wrong way. The largest tip is they require payment immediately and will not give you the original creditor information.

It is best to ignore them and block their emails.
