I was contacted by letter about an offer for settling an old debt for Bell Atlantic for a disconnected phone. Couldn't understand why this particular outstanding "debt" didn't come up in our recent credit check for our mortgage, so when my wife went online to check out the website, this fraud website came up instead...

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Probably past the reporting period and statute of limitations

AUTHOR: Tim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 10, 2008

The debt probably isn't appearing on your credit report because, most likely, it is more than seven years old, and therefore beyond the allowable reporting period, which probably places it beyond the statute of limitations for judicial collections as well.

In other words, they gave you a "settlement offer" for a debt for which you are no longer legally responsible and can't damage your credit.

Afni, if my memory serves me correctly, is a junk-debt buyer. They purchase old debts for pennies on the dollar and collect whatever they can. It's quite lucrative for them, because there are enough people out there that don't understand their rights and the laws regarding collections.

Send them a letter by certified mail, with return receipt requested, stating that you are aware that the debt is "time barred" and that they are to no longer make any communications with you or take any actions against you.

Best regards!
