Paid Alcoa Good Times over $3,900 to perform service and repairs on motorcycle.  The same error message (brake failure) still appears after taking bike in twice for the repairs.  Dealer won't return calls to resolve the issue.

Advice to stay away from this dealership -

Getting the facts straight

First of all, the bike was not sitting in a "barn" as you stated.  Secondly, the other dealer did not want to work on the bike because they said it was "too old".  I might add that that dealership didn’t even know the first year these bikes were produced.  Dealerships will sell you the bike, no problem, but when it gets to be 8 to 10 years old or more, they do not want to service them anymore.  Thirdly, you sold us parts we didn't need, i.e, you need a new battery your old one won't take a charge, you said.  FYI, the old battery did in fact take a charge and even sitting on a shelf still has a full charge.  You did end up refunding us for the lugnuts sold to us as a "safety" issue when there was nothing wrong with the original ones.  As for belt you replaced, we have taken it to a number of motorcycle shops and the consensus is that there was nothing wrong with the belt – no crack, no dry-rot, nothing!

This bike has less than 7,500 miles on – so it really hasn’t had a rough life as you allege.

You failed to mention that the first time we picked up the bike, it went into “limp home” mode because it was not fixed properly the first time.

You blow off the inadequate repair performed at your dealership by saying the Spyder is complex with variable variables.  An oil change costs $331.

You might want to check with Phil in your service department about the call I made on July 26, 2016 at 4:40 pm – we spoke for 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Your customer service is non-existent – I had to call numerous times to get through because you are short-staffed and your service writers quit working for you.  They don’t return calls.  It took us 3 weeks to even get an estimate from you.   Then, two weeks after that before we even got the bike back the first time, which went into “limp home” mode and we had to bring it back again.

You even told us the reason it took so long was that you work on customer’s bikes who bought them from you, rather than working on the bikes as a first in, first out basis.

One of the initial items we wanted replaced was not down on the two times in – the light assembly for the license plate.

You only take people’s hard-earned money and don’t stand behind your service work – period.

On this particular 2008 Can Am spyder the spyder was in poor condition and had set up in a barn for a few years. The customer had checked with another dealer who would not work on it before they brought it to us. We found rodents nests in the spyder as we were doing various repairs and recalls that were due. We did repairs on the fuel system (vapor canister, purge valve, fuel pump etc), cleaned the throttle bodies, new tires, new drive pulley and belt, spark plugs, oil and oil filter, various damaged hoses, reset the DPS, and checked the brakes. After resetting the faults the mechanic test rode the spyder with no problems. At the request of the customer I personnally rode the spyder 10 miles with no problems.

The brake system on the spyder is quite complex with many varibles, we simply checked the brake pads and function and the brakes tested OK. The brake failure is tied into the stability control system, brake pressure, and other interlocks. If any of these components stops working properly then a brake failure can result. We can only fix what problems exist at the time we are checking out a unit. We do not replace parts that might go bad at a later date unless we have a track record of failure at a certain time or mileage, and we have customer approval. This is true with the spyder battery as a battery with poor health (ability to produce power at a steady voltage) should be replaced espically in a spyder that is sensitive to low battery voltage caused problems.

I checked with the service manager and we know of no calls that were not returned to this customer. The brake failure problem they have I feel is real but can be from a number of different components that would need to be diagnosed with a computer and replaced as required.

I feel liked we tried our best on a machine that others would not work on. This spyder has had a rough life and other issues will come up from time to time. We did not replace every component that we replaced what was due or required to be changed.
