In early 2010, Amegy Bank began charging a monthly service fee despite claiming both on the phone and on their website that the particular account I was enrolled in did not charge any monthly service fee.

I called customer service and was assured that it was a mistake and that my account "accidentally" had changed status from a free checking account to another account that did asses service fees.

Recently I noticed that I was once again being charged a monthly service fee.  Giving the bank the benefit of the doubt, I looked on their website to see which personal checking accounts, if any, had service fees. (http://www.amegybank.com/personal_banking/checking_accts.aspx)

On this page, AmegyBank lists their different checking accounts.  The first thing you may notice is that Amegy Bank names their accounts in such a way that is confusing and misleading.  By that I mean that there is no correlation between the name they give an account type and the type of account it is.  In each case, Amegy Bank highlights the fact that there is no minimum balance and no service fee.    In writing this report, I just noticed a tiny * next to one of the accounts.  At the bottom of the page, written in a font almost too small to read, the bank states that accounts with no activity for 60 days and a balance less than $100 will automatically be switched to another account type for which there IS a service fee.
