Yeesh.

I just had my first interview with this company. They are opening an office here in Baton Rouge.

They called me after seeing my rsum posted online. They said they were looking for a Public Relations Assistant.

I went in for the interview this afternoon. I had a cover letter, copy of my rsum, and a sample press release. There were two other women there for interviews. One was older and looked like she's smart enough to not fall for this. The other girl was young and had no personality. She'll probably be with the company for a little while until these people decide she won't be earning them any money.

I had a ten minute interview with "Nathan" who gave me endless compliments on my cover letter, and he asked me if I wrote it myself. Now, not to be demeaning or make light of my skills, but I'm only a high school graduate. If he really wanted to make it seem like this was a Fortune 500 company with real professionals, he wouldn't have acted like my cover letter was equivalent to reading the Holy Gospel for the first time. Employees of ANY good company, Fortune 500 or not, are well adjusted enough to EXPECT proper business correspondence.

Before I could ask any questions about compensation, work hours, or nature of the actual job itself, he told me there would be a second interview ("Q&A session") I'd have to come to on Thursday afternoon. Having been led down the destructive interviewing process of Dunhill Enterprises a few years ago (also known as DS-MAX, http://groups.msn.com/DSMAXTheAftermath) this was a major warning signal for me... Then, added to that, were the countless compliments, the lack of questions about my actual work experience, the promise of "unlimited income" etc. He told me that within 10 years, I'd have enough money to retire. I thought this was very unusual for any company to basically hire people with the mindset that they'd be working on a ten year deadline. It did NOT seem right to me.

Just like DS-Max or any other cult/scam corporation out there, there will always be those devoted employees who will check up these boards and all that kind of stuff in defense of their cause. Guess what? I KNOW I AM RIGHT. I am not management and should not have to go in for three interviews for a sales position (having been told it was a PR position, too, how misleading). I should not be asked what I want out of life at my first interview; that's more like first date material. It was just so very wrong.

I don't have a degree in business practices, but there was just something completely amiss about this place. There was also the fact that I was called "sweetheart" REPEATEDLY during my interview, but I'll let that slide for now, or at least until I find a good sexual harassment lawyer. Anyone have any suggestions?

I did realize that, and still if you do your research, not on Torchmark, but on AMERICAN INCOME LIFE, spelled that way you will find our rating. It's no wonder by the way, that you are and EX employee.

AM Best

AUTHOR: A - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, November 28, 2005

Alfred,

I had to respond to your post about AM Best just for the sheer ignorance of the comment.

AM Best is a rating company that rates insurance companies based on two things:

Financial Strength - the ability to pay claims based on cash reserves

Payment of Claims - the actual payment of claims

They do not rate anything else. They don't rate customer service, complaints, agents or anything else. So your "Ask AM Best" statement really doesn't make any sense if you understand what they do, which obviously you do not. In addition, the last time I checked you little brochures that have the AM Best rating were referring to Torchmark's (The parent company of AIL) rating.

I am and employee of AIL in the Baton Rouge office, and I saw this posting and just had to respond. I happen to know "Nathan", and he is actually an upstanding guy. I'm sorry that you felt that your experience was bad but it sounds to me like you commented before you actually looked into the legitimacy of the company or of Nathan's personality.

As far as the company being a "scam", this is so untrue. You haven't worked or researched this company, so how is it that you are justified in saying this. By the way, the "Q and A" session is exactly that. You wouldn't know since you didn't show up. Thanks for passing. It is clear that you are a presumptuous person, and we teach our people to be otherwise.

I happened to be in the office the day that you were there and because it is an open office, which happens to only be 700 square feet, everyone could here your interview with "Nathan". I did not find that his one good comment on your cover letter was offensive at all. He simply said that he was impressed by it. Also, if you ever get the opportunity, in some unfortunate company, to sit on his side of the desk you would know that employers see all kinds of horrible and unprofessional things as it relates to resumes. So don't take a comment on your job well done as a sign that the company is subpar in any way. By the way, I really doubt that you have a case for sexual harrassment, "sweetheart", since it was an open room, noone remembers anyone calling you that, and if you knew anything about the law regarding you would have had to voice that you felt that you were in an uncomfortable situation.

Your cover letter did look nice, but here's a tip. The next time you interview, pictures of John Lennin and other rock stars on your jacket are not considered "professional attire". I believe that you were told to dress this way when contacted.

American Income is a professional company that employs professional people. Pro football players, lawyers, doctors, intellects, and people from all walks of life are part of the American Income family. We pride ourselves on integrity, and our heart for our clients, as well as our representatives. If what we do is not your "cup of tea" we understand. But as it relates to challenging the legitimacy of our company and our people either ask AM Best why the hell they rated us an A+, or don't even go there!!!!

Grow up and get over it

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 01, 2005

Most interviewers ARE amzed to find a properly done resume' and cover letter. You would be shocked at how often a job applicant shows up wearing little if anything that is considered professional attire.

As for being called "sweetheart", big deal. Grow up and get over it. I have had women as bosses, and they call the men "honey". Go see if you can find an attorney to sue for something as trivial as that. Good luck. Was there ever a demand for sex in exchange for employment? Was sex ever discussed at all? No? No sexual harrassment. The courts have stopped ruling that looking at someone or complimenting them is illegal. Have fun getting that attorney. Normal human interaction is not harrassment. I have customers who call me honey. I have parts delivery drivers I call baby. Grow up, and get over it.
