Faithfully kept tags and receipt for aluminum oversized Eddie Bauer edition outdoor lounge chairs.  Tag claims "Lifetime Warranty" with no disclaimers or fine print. Chairs have been used very occasionally since purchase in 2002.  "1200 denier polyester with reinforced pvc backing" is degraded under one seat, all grommets are rusted and straps have snapped.  Customer service says the "Lifetime Warranty" means "Manufacturer Warranty" and that what I describe is all "normal wear" and will not replace any part of the chairs.  What, then, does Lifetime Warranty legally mean?

"Lifetime" is relative

AUTHOR: Ed - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 29, 2011

My understanding is that "lifetime" typically does not mean your lifetime, but the products lifetime.  If the manufacturer deems that the product has a useful life span of 5 years then that is how long they will cover it for.  A limited lifetime warranty means that there are additional restrictions.  In my opinion this just a way for the manufacturer to make you believe that your getting a benefit that you may never be able to claim.  It also leaves their actual responsibility open ended.  If they receive minimal warranty claims they may honor them to capitalize on the good will and positive reputation to be gained.  If on the other hand the product was inferior they ultimately have an out.  The bottom line is that a good company makes good products and stands behind them.
