In Sept of 1999, I bought a new Apple IMac computer from Mac Mall. After 3 weeks of very little use the monitor broke. I called Mac Mall and they told me that there were no refunds on IMacs, a point they forgot to mention when they sold me the computer.

American Express and myself had very little luck changing their minds. So I turned to Apple Computer itself.

I told them that they had sold me a lemon, because it had died after 3 weeks, and I wanted it replaced. They said they had a 1-year warranty and that it would have to be taken in for service.

I brought it to the nearest service center. 2 MONTHS LATER it was returned to me and it is still not working. There are technical problems and the blurriness of the screen it still prominent.

So again I called Executive Consumer Relations at Apple. I said
that it's obviously a problem that can't be fixed. I am a consumer, I paid almost $1,000 for the computer. If I had wanted a refurbished computer, I would have bought one. But they stood firm on their story. They, specifically Tiffany Mitzel head of Apple Customer Relations, told me that Apple "deserved another chance to fix the computer." As a consumer whose business hinges on this computer, I didn't feel that they deserved another chance, they had their chance and it was unsuccessful. I wanted a replacement.

After hours of arguing myself blue in the face, there was nothing I could do. Tiffany said that Apple would "bend the rules" and send a service call to my home to service the computer on-site so I wouldn't have to be inconvenienced by taking it out again. With very little recourse, I had to agree. It's taken 2 weeks for them to call me with a time for the service call.

They finally called this morning and said that they would have to take the computer out of my home YET AGAIN to try and service it.

This is so totally unacceptable. I don't know what to do in this situation. Obviously the computer is a lemon. And even if it's not, it doesn't work properly and I'd like a replacement. I didn't go out and spend $1,000 to get a computer that has to be in the shop from almost the minute it was delivered.

My hands are tied and my frustration is at a peak

Wrong Again apple does not necessarily equal superior computer.

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 08, 2005

Donna, you've been informed otherwise two times now and you keep commenting.

First, apple does not necessarily equal superior computer.

I personally don't have a problem with Apple I like their products, I do have a problem with misinformed lemming like consumers constantly bash people with opposing opinions, and a lot of times (and I've seen this first hand) brush their problems underneath the rug for brand loyalty.

They do make nice, stable (sometimes, as every computer has different problems throughout it's lifespan) computers. Also, your hard drive estimate is way off.

I'd also like to mention that nearly every graphics application that will run on a mac is also available on the pc, I can point out a few that were available on pc long before they were available on a mac Maya etc

Mac as you point out is the graphics industry standard for one reason, because they look good. Let me tell you a secret, high end visuals almost never equal good functionality (especially in applications).

If you honestly break it down even the G5 isn't any faster than a high end pc. I know, I know it was advertised otherwise falsely I might add; if you don't believe me do some research.

It's a bad idea to come onto a website and randomly flame people when you don't know what your talking about.

Still An MAC Person

AUTHOR: Donna - (Canada)

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2004

Quentin, thank you for your response. There being so few Apple Authorized dealers here in Toronto, it is very possible that you work at the very store where I now do all my MAC shopping.

Just to clarify a couple of things. First of all, Steve misunderstood my comment about them having me back up and running the next day and basically called me an idiot because I'm a MAC user. I'm not and I didn't appreciate someone who has no idea what the market is like here, making assumptions.

If you work in a MAC store, then you know that in 2002 you could not buy a new MAC for $1000. The new eMacs come pretty close but that's about it.

Just FYI, the Apple Authorized Dealer that I had to deal with (since the place I now deal with was not Apple Authorized at that time) did inform me that a new *APPLE* hard drive would cost $800. I spoke to Apple and confirmed this. I know that I could have put another hard drive in there and it would have cost much less but with the machine still being fairly new, I wanted to stick with Apple products. Maybe both the repair facility and Apple lied to me, maybe they didn't. I really don't care.

I'm happy that I chose the route that I did since $249 was a very small price to pay considering that before the extended warranty ran out, I also got my ethernet card and a few other things replaced that were fried during a storm.

I more than got my money's worth out of my Apple Care warranty and would gladly pay more to extend it further now that the warranty has expired.

missinformed on the Mac

AUTHOR: Quentin - (Canada)

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2004

Steven, was right about the cost of the Drive replacement.
I work for an Apple authorized store in Toronto.
If we had replaced the drive for you, it would have been under $249 CAD, including the Labour.

I think someone fed you a line on pricing, which I do not like to see in any industry.

The warranty is a good thing to have, regardless.

It turns out that you did do all of the right things for the wrong reasons.

No Problems with Mac

AUTHOR: Donna - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 19, 2003

Steve, your being a PC user, I understand if you weren't clear about my comment above.

First of all, I live in Canada dear and you can't get a decent computer for the graphics industry for $1000. Maybe $2000., if you're lucky. You can't do professional graphics for print on a PC because the industry is still MAC based, as it should be.

Second? I could have put a PC formatted hard drive in but it wouldn't function properly with the MAC OS - not something I've been told but something I know for a fact. A brand new MAC formatted hard drive from Apple would have cost $700 to $800 plus whatever I was charged for labour. Believe what you want but this is the way prices are for Mac in Canada.

Finally, your assumption that I'm stupid is showing your own ignorance. My statement was that they had me 'back up and running' the next day (meaning that my computer was working again) ... not 'they backed me up'. Even a lowly Mac user knows that backing up our hard drives is simple and costs nothing.

I'm sure you're very knowledgeable about computers and have built many many PC's but I'd hazard that you've never built a working MAC. Different ballgame. Superior computer.

Mac Problems

AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 17, 2003

I have to comment on the statement made by Donna. Donna is clearly an apple user. The fact that she doesn;t know anything about computers is obvious. I own an apple and a pc. I have built 5 pc's for myself and others. First of all, it only costs $100 for a hard drive! and backing it up!?! free. Apple didn't cut you a dela, they lied to you, and made you feel good, how were you to know any better, you're an apple user. $1000 would buy you a new comp. I can't believe you believed it would cost that much. and tiffany, just let apple try and fix it again. they do know how to fix their own crappy stuff, and it's the easiest way to do it.

Apple of my eye!

AUTHOR: Donna - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, October 23, 2002

I have been a Mac user since 1987 and I have to say that my experience and impressions of Apple are very different from the above. My very first serious Apple problem came this year when the hard drive on my 1-year-old G4 crashed and burned.

Having had so many problem-free years with Macintosh, I had not purchase the Apple Care extended warranty.

With 3 days left to my 'window to purchase' the Apple Care Plan, Apple not only sold me the plan to extend my warranty knowing full well that in doing so, they would be replacing my hard drive for free but sent me to a local authorized repair service that had my computer back up and running the next day. My bill? $249. CAD, covering me for the next 3 years vs. the close to $1000. it would have cost me to pay for the repair myself. Apple service and support is tops in my book, as are their products!
