Witnesses told police Steve Hekkel, owner of the Copper Penny Bar on Kennedy Avenue, instructed employees to mop blood from the floor and "get rid of everything" before police arrived after the stabbing of Victor Adams, of West Lafayette, in January, according to court records. Ernesto R. Ramirez, 30, of Merrillville, has been charged with murder and is awaiting trial.

Hekkel is alleged to have wrapped the knife believed used in the stabbing in a napkin or rag and taken it in the direction of the beer garden, where it later was recovered from a Dumpster.

Court records state Hekkel also was seen tampering with the bar's video equipment prior to police arriving.
