Below this introduction is the conversation I had with the potential employer and I feel the only reason I was not hired for this job was that I would not work for free.  This employer is also found on Facebook and he states the following, "Benjamin Gang Clothing. We in the gang believe in the hustle. We believe in putting in hours. We believe in the hard work. We believe in the grind. We believe in ourselves to go out and get whats ours. If you're out there going for your Benjamins then WELCOME TO THE GANG."

( I feel if the above is to be true he should not discriminate potential employees that are willing and capable to work for him.  I think he is a con artist and I feel he will con more people the longer he is allowed to stay in business.)

From the Client:

I need 1 image done by tonight that follows spreadshirt's requirements:

http://www.spreadshirt.com/help-C1328/categoryId/310/articleId/320

How much experience do you have with vector designs for clothing, and can you get this image done tonight?

Because there are alot of applicants applying for the job, this is part of the interview process. The approval of spreadshirt takes 48 hours. I will pick the best 3 applicants whose vector has the best quality gets approved. Here is the image  Just the person

Is this job still open?  I see that you messaged me 9 hours ago and I was not in my office.  I will wake up early to see if you have replied by then and would be more than willing to work on it. I will wake up approximately at 7am to check my email.

Time frame: If the style is based on the style I offered in my attachment example this complete design would take roughly 4 to 6 hours to complete, full body.  If this design is less than full-body it will take less time. If you prefer any other style please specify and I will adjust my time frame accordingly.

I read your attachment spreadshirt requirement and they are thorough and I would expect nothing less.  I have experience with production prints and understand the procedure as far as converting all lines to shapes.  I work very thorough and clean.  This design would not be a problem.

 Respectfully,

From the Client:

The job is still open?

Reply from me to the Client:

Do you want me to work on it?  I asked you a few questions regarding what you needed above regarding my style and the style you want.  I will be happy to work on this for you.

What I mentioned above, "Time frame: If the style is based on the style I offered in my attachment example this complete design would take roughly 4 to 6 hours to complete, full body.  If this design is less than full-body it will take less time. If you prefer any other style please specify and I will adjust my time frame accordingly. "

From the Client:

I just need to see if you can get the designs approved or not. This is the main problem Im having

Reply from me to the Client:

Ok.  Well,I am willing to work for you.  I have worked with screen printers for clothing.  I know how to create images that do not bleed when the ink is printed and each color is separated.  I know how screen print machines work as I used to work for a manufacturing plant that Printed ink on products with even more advanced machines.  I DO CLEAN WORK. ( e.i. polypropelene cups, bowls, etc...: Basically just styrofoam.)  I did this for the McDonalds Client and was the head artist working with high end sales and I worked closely with the marketing department until I was laid off in 2008.  Look em up, they are called "wincup".  ( The 3rd largest polypropalene and polystyrene manufacturer.  What that translates to is that I created and designed for agencies world wide.

I know you dont now me from "joe", but if you can trust me this time maybe we can build a business relationship.  I wont let you down.

Society 6 Profile:http://society6.com/UrbanPunk  <---there is also a link on my website

 My website:http://www.skelniktoday.com

 Wincup:http://www.wincup.com/

To make you feel more comfortable I am available most everyday.  I can give you my cell phone number too if you want to briefly talk.  I can answer any question you may have.  I have been doing this a long time.

P.S - The reason some files may have been rejected ( I'm just guessing, but willing to bet) is that screen printers work with colors separated.  If you have only 1 color than simple most any file can be translated into a 1 color print.  With multiple colors each color has to be designed seperate from the other.  With some design files artist will create a great looking piece, but the "DESIGN" can be faulty and unrecognizable by the machine in which they are printed.

I know this because it used to be my job to add a 32 of an inch white space between colors in files that other artist created.  I was basically a "file cleaner".

I can offer a guarantee on this. Without a doubt I will work with your printer "the website you go through" to make sure the design is correct.

From the Client:

As you know there are alot of graphic designers applying for this job. I just so happen to need a full-time vector creator. By full-time I mean fixed pay when needed. What I need for you to do is make that image a vector that can be approved by the company. That is part of the interviewing process.

Reply from me to the Client:

So you want me to create that image for you without getting paid and that is the interview process?  How can you guarantee you will provide more work in the future as, in essence, I would be working initially for free?

I have a portfolio and I have the knowledge base.  Being able to complete the work is not a question on my end.  I would like nothing more than to work for you, but I am sorry I do not work for free.  I hope you find  what you are looking for.  If you have any more future questions or concerns I am always available.

P.S There might be a lot of designers, just like there are a lot of contractors that build houses.  Competition is what makes business worth while.  The key here is finding someone who is both a good designer and can provide quality work and has the knowledge to back it up.  Just as I would not expect a contractor to build me a bathroom before he builds my house, I can only provide you with my knowledge and portfolio.

I will stop there though as I have already made my point.  Again, good luck to you and my door is always open.

Not Defamation

AUTHOR: SkelnikToday - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, October 10, 2011

It is an assumption that "personal issuses" of my own are what controlled my urge to file a report against this company.  That is not fact at all.  Also, defamation is to speak untruth of a certain person or company and this is not the case.

As I have clearly represented myself and stated already, Benjamin Gang clothing denied me work only because I would not provide the completed project first.  This is not how business should be handled.  I have a clear understanding of what the was involved with this job.  I offered concise details of completing all job tasks.  It was only when I would not work for free that I was rejected.

It is sad that Graphic Designers are treated so rudely.

To Start of, I never made a contract with this applicant.

The message we responded with after the last thing said by Mr. Skelnik was:

Okay I'll keep in contact

I believe it is a shame that someone can make false statements about a small business in this current state of economy. Small businesses like Benjamin Gang are trying to bring the economy back to a better state, so we have to be sure to use our resources wisely.

The "INTERVIEW" process was a result of multiple applicants being paid to complete a vector and not being able to even get the vector approved. If the applicants vector was not chosen, then we wouldn't have used it.

If you check the track record on Odesk, you will see that not only did I pay the people who have completed the jobs, but I also received great feedback for being a cooperative employer.

I believe this was more of a personal problem that Mr. Skelnik decided to take out on us.

Do your research on the case and let us know what you think.
