Best Buy Ripoff Purchased Sony Handycam plus extended warranty Stopped working Moisture inside Will not fix Cause was my fault Not Ocean air They should pay $700.00 Citrus Heights California
*UPDATE Employee: how to help resolve your issue
I purchased a 699.00 Sony Handycam. I purchased the extended warranty. Came back from a trip to the ocean. Took the camera in. They said that "I poured water on it and that makes it my fault." That the only way moisture could get in would be my fault. I have not poured water on to the camera. If it got ocean air into it the camera is faulty. They should repair. They said it is $700.00 to repair the camera, even now the new camera is $399.00. I argued with the management, it didn't help. I am out $715.00.

#1 UPDATE Employee
how to help resolve your issue

I don't work for the specific store in question nor was I involved in your specific case but here's is some advise.
when you have a service plan (PSP) as the company calls them on a video camera they cover things like "normal wear & tear" not accidental or physical damage.. regardless of what a sales person tells you verbally.. (which can be disputed.. customer is lying and was clearly told the facts..or the employee outright lied, or general honest misunderstanding etc. ) it does NOT matter..
that's why agreements are Done in WRITTING every customer is given a "written" copy of the PSP plan - what it covers & does not .. customers should actually read it carefully.. if you have questions call 1-888-best-buy.. if you don't like the conditions return the PSP for a full refund.. (I believe within 30days) or pro-rated until it expires.
recourse on your problem
when you go to check-in the item for repair (it's a service NOT a replacement plan) at a best buy 3 things can happen.. 1) the item is marked as "devo/junkout" which means the store cannot send it in for service.. the indivual tech examines the camera and if no physcial damage - you get a new one under the PSP.. or the tech says "liquid damage" etc. have a store manager review but in the end the store makes the call.. worse case if not resolved.. contact the manufacture directly to look at the camera (and give a written evaluation.. )
the other possibilities
2) The item is sent to a 3rd party national repair center (NOT Best Buy - they are factory authorized for multiple companies Nikon Canon Sony etc and are actually highly rate by consumer reports etc) this is 95% of all camera/video repairs.. if they say "liquid damage" they will actually take photos as evidance and will make it avail to the customer for review.. in which case your basically out of luck... you know if your camera when to this service center because the paperwork will say "DTV" on it..
3) if your camera was sent to a local best buy service center (about 5% of the cases) and is marked as liquid damage.. request the item be sent out "DTV"
the terms of the PSP (service plans) have changed over the last year (new brochure's printed) if you purchased.. like 2yrs ago, you should always keep the original paperwork.. some of the plans says "moisture /condensation is covered.. but liquid is NOT" others say all liquid is not covered.. read your paperwork
you may still be able to get a refund (pro-rated) on the service plan for the un-used months.. try it at the local store.. if they refuse call 1-888-best-buy and ask about refund on service plan.. -I am NOT an expert on the "terms & conditions" they might say you've already used it and refuse.. if that's the case your plan does provide free battery replacement if your original is defective - I would take advantage of that.. give it to a friend, sell it etc.
to be fair.. I doubt you "poured water into the camera" but it's feasible that the camera could have gotten water inside.. if your at the beach a wave comes up and hits it.. or your taking video of kids playing in the water etc.. condensation /moisture is tricky .. I was in Savanna Georgia with 98% humidity that steamed up my camera lens.. I am not clear how best buy service determines "condensation -vs- liquid damage" so that's why the language was changed in the new service plans.. Normal wear & tear.. are things like buttons stopped working, battary door no longer closes etc. ALSO READ the service form you signed...
I feel scammed "service plans should cover accidental damage"again this is a business decision of any company.. Best Buy is now offering "Accidental damage coverage" on laptops (of course for an additional fee) if it's worth the cost or not is up to the consumer.
