I had a sunroom added on in 2008, by a local Craft-Bilt contractor under the BetterLiving Sunroom name.  I am very familiar with the construction industry and did all the required research before I went with them.  None the less--I got conned by the Craft-Bilt promise.

There were no problems during original construction.  The room passed every review and code inspection.  However, the next year, the local contractor (BetterLiving Sunrooms)  later went out of business and then declared bankruptcy.

I later developed problems where the roof joins to the main home.  With the local representative out of business, I turned to Craft-Bilt to have them honor their warranty--which is a prime part of the sales pitch (i.e. you ever have to worry about your room because of the 50 year warranty).

At first, Craft-Bilt ignored my requests.  Then, 9 months later, they asked some random guy, who was their new "representative" to contact me.  He demanded $150 to even look at the room to see if there were any warranty repairs to be made.  Once he finally came out, he decided that nothing fell under the warranty, but I would have to have the entire area where the sunroom joins the main home re-framed and reroofed.  At my expense.  Never mind the fact that it was framed and roofed to Craft-Bilt's specific directions and plans.

Craft-Bilt's warranty is not what they claim it is.  It does not cover anything--including any problems with your sunroom's design.  Craft-Bilt designed the roof integration with my main home.  It is its responsibility.  I have found this to be a horrible situation and still not resolved.

Please reconsider if you think of using Craft-Bilt or BetterLiving Sunrooms.  If you have a problem, they will not honor their warranty.  You are better off paying the extra money and going with a normal contractor, not this company.  If I knew then what I know now, I would have never gone this direction.

On the plus side, my room is really pretty and, hopefully, when I get it redone by a real general contractor (not a Craft-Bilt/BetterLiving contractor), it will be perfect.

#2 General Comment

This dealer has been replaced

AUTHOR: Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Co. - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, March 31, 2011

We are commenting on this report as the new Betterliving dealer in the Twin Cities.  We are not associated with the dealer who installed the sunroom cited in this report, and are not responsible for the installation. The product we represent is fully engineered and is one of the leading sunrooms nationwide.  Contrary to the comment above, our manufacturer offers one of the strongest material warranties in the industry. The homeowner is referring to the installation warranty offered by the former dealer, who went out of business - this is not the Craft-Bilt warranty.

Our installers have been trained both at the factory and on site.  We hope that educated consumers will give us the opportunity to show them the work we have done in the Twin Cities area, and not be persuaded away from contacting Betterliving by this report.  We hope to have the opportunity to answer your questions and earn your business.

Craft-Bilt Mfg. Co. did not install this sunroom

AUTHOR: Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Co. - (United States of America)

As the manufacturer cited in the report above, we warrant the materials we manufacture. The independent local dealer with whom this homeowner contracted is responsible for installation. Our company offers free installation training to all of our dealers and makes recommendations to the dealership regarding the competency of their installers. However, the dealers are independent businesses, and we do not control their hiring practices or employees. As part of our support, we send a member of our training team to observe our dealers installers at work, and made recommendations to the owners for continuous improvement.  However, we are not on site to provide ongoing supervision of the dealerships.

As a manufacturer, we are in communication with the homeowners who purchase our products only when they register their manufacturers warranty with our company.  We immediately address any complaints cited by consumers with the installing dealer.  Product warranty claims are taken care of immediately by us, but installation issues such as leaks are not manufacturing issues, and must be addressed by the installing dealer.

In cases such as the one described above, if the dealer has an excessive number of consumer complaints, we may rescind the dealers authorization to carry our products.  We make efforts to replace dealers quickly who have been removed from our network, or who go out of business, so that consumers have an authorized company to turn to in case of questions or concerns.

However, the new dealer was not responsible for the installation, and therefore is not obligated to perform service at no charge. When new components are needed to repair a product, our company will cover the cost of all components under the manufacturers warranty. If new components are needed because of faulty installation and the product is still covered under an installation warranty, we will work with the new dealer to discount or provide the components to lessen the cost to the homeowner.

Our Manufacturers Warranty remains one of the strongest and most inclusive in the industry, backed by a company that has been in the business since 1946.  We understand the frustration of these consumers at having to pay for a service they believed was covered under a
service warranty.  But unfortunately, when a company goes out of business, any warranties they offered goes with them.  In the same way that one would not expect a plumber or hairdresser to fix anothers mistake at no charge, a new dealer cannot be expected to repair the installation of a former dealer for free.

We are compelled to advise consumers who turn to this website for recommendations that the site specifically states:  While we encourage and even require authors to only file truthful reports, Ripoff Report does not guarantee that all reports are authentic or accurate. Be an educated  consumer. Read what you can and make your decision based upon an examination of all available information.Consumers, just because a company or individual is reported on Rip-off Report does not necessarily mean you should not do business with them. In many cases, its just the opposite. Just because a company is posted on Rip-off Report does not mean they are "bad". At some point in time, everyone has felt like they've been ripped off, when that may not have been the case.
