My girlfriend and I had traveled from Western New York to Columbus, OH to look at a vehicle which was being sold at Bobby Layman Chevrolet, only to discover that after 6 hours of driving, the vehicle price was falsely printed online AND in the local Auto Trader classified ad.

We test drove and inspected the vehicle, and we both decided that we would purchase it. However, when the sales rep contacted a manager, he returned only to tell us that they had miss priced the vehicle and they put the blame on Auto Trader. They said it was an error in some computer software and all the dealers were experiencing it for at least 3 weeks. The bottom line is that they could only sell the vehicle to us for $10,000 instead of the advertised $6500. Even the sales rep who I spoke to on the phone had never mentioned that the price in the ad was incorrect. I HAD TO DRIVE 600 MILES TO FIND OUT THE PRICE WAS WRONG. Not to mention I had told him I was from New York and I would be driving there to see the truck. This was the same day that they told me the error was at least 3 weeks old and that all the sales reps were informed to tell customers about the error in the pricing.

I spoke with 3 salesmen before I knew there was a problem in the pricing. I even took the vehicle for a test drive without any of them stating there was an error.

In addition to Bobby Layman's incorrect pricing, the window sticker on the vehicle had plenty of other incorrect information. It had 4 doors instead of 2, and it also said its engine was a 4 cylinder instead of a 6 cylinder. Latter I found that their updated ad had corrected these; however it now incorrectly states that it has a manual transmission instead of an automatic.
I had called other dealers in the area and visited them, and they all had the correct pricing. So I wonder why they are saying that it was Auto Trader's fault. I think it is BOBBY LAYMAN'S Fault for the fact that:
There are numerous errors on the window sticker which has incorrect details and features of the vehicle
3 salesmen had no clue that the pricing was incorrect in their advertisement

Plus the manager has told us he received over 150 calls on the vehicle due to the wrong price. Why haven't they stopped the add, or even correct it?

So basically, after my long drive and all the frustration, Bobby Layman Chevrolet deserves this RIP OFF REPORT for their shoddy customer service and rude attitude which they had given both me and my innocent girlfriend.

Please contact Bobby Layman at 800-537-6264 and let him know that you will never buy a vehicle from him and that you will let everyone know that they have no respect for their customers.

Thank You

Mickey

Wow I bet you are so relieved Mickey. The Internet Director has told you that you didn't drive 600 miles to buy a car that they advertised incorrectly. You must have imagined it because he works for a car dealer and they wouldn't lie now would they? They wouldn't put an incorrect price in an advert just to get people into their yard now would they? They would immediately tell you on the phone before you left to drive 600 miles that the price was wrong, wouldn't they? Yes, Mickey these absolute pillars of society are owed an apology by you - shame on you for thinking that they would deliberately deceive a potential customer!!!!

I love your title David and I'm sorry that you had to set this consumer straight. I'm sure you have much more important things to do with your time given your executive position. When will these consumers learn to stand outside the yard and throw their money in and go away and stop bothering you? How dare they expect service, honesty and ethical behaviour from you!! You handled it by the book telling him that he imagined driving 600 miles and talking to any of the staff - well done.

I'm sure Mickey will see the error of his ways and contact you now. By the way how would you resolve this issue for him? Would you drive the vehicle 600 miles to him and sell it to him for the originally advertised price? If that is not your intention, how can you possibly help him?

Obvious Mistake

Mickey,

I am the Internet Director for Bobby Layman Chevrolet. Since reading this report I have sat down with our General Sales Manager, Desk Managers and my Internet Team to find out what happened.

The interesting part is that no-one remembers anything about this incident. I can assure you that all information/options listed about a vehicle on our website a window sticker and on Auto-Trader are done using a VIN decoder.

What this means is all the information about a vehicle (engine size, trim package, # of doors, auto/manual trans, etc) is pulled from the code a manufacturer embeds in the VIN of a vehicle.

This is unchangeable. If a price was printed incorrectly, it is unfortunate but I see two problems with this accusation also:
1) that is too big a mistake and there is no logic to it. 99.99% of pricing mistakes happen online due to a typing error (10999.00 becomes 1999.00 or 109999.00).
2) There is no reason we would have a mistake like that last more than 1 complaint. It takes literally 1 minute to change the price of a vehcile listed both on our website and on Auto-Trader.

Also, every listing on Auto-Trader comes with this disclaimer:
( taken from Visitor Agreement )
The material that appears on AutoTrader.com is for informational purposes only. Despite our efforts to provide useful and accurate information, errors may appear from time to time.

If you have any further problems I would recomend you contact me personally. I have no problem with helping to resolve any issues you may have with either this dealership or the vehicles we advertise.
