My fiance' and I went to Friedmans Jewelers to purchase my engagement/wedding band set. We had purchased a bracelet and necklace from there before, so we were pleased with their jewelry. I was wearing the engagement ring only and put the band away. Three months after wearing the engagement ring, I noticed it started turning yellow, as if tarnishing.

This band is supposed to be 14k white gold. I took the ring in for its three month inspection,(we have insurance on the set) and, they proceed to tell me that it needed to be sent in to be "dipped". At that time, I was so unhappy, I asked to exchange the set for another.

They wanted to run another credit report on my fiance' to see if we were eligable to exchange the set??? At that time they said that he was not and to make a few more payment and try again, leaving me to take the "dipped" ring. Three month later, after the "dip", the ring turns yellow again.

I took it in for another inspection, same thing, another "dip". This time, we ask to exchange the set. Another credit check later, they tell us his score went from a 585 to a 516 and they can't except anything under a 520. Which confused us because his score was not good enough when we tried to exchange the first time when it was a 585, and why are they even checking his credit score for an exchange on a ring I have coverage on???

Why am I being stuck with this set I am unhappy with. So, again, they tell us to make a few more payment and try again. We made this months payment, and we only have two left, all I ask is to exchange this set for what we want or give us our money back.

Just for your general information

There is no such thing as genuine white gold. White gold is formed when white metals such as nickel, rhodium, or even platinum are mixed together with yellow gold. Rhodium plating or "dipping" is a treatment that is put on white gold and is required to maintain it's white appearance. To futher rebute back to the individual about our company's financial status, our company's status has nothing to do with how white gold is made. Ask any jewelry retailer and they will tell you that rhodium treatment is necessary and they will try to sell you a warranty that will cover such a treatment. To further illustrate this concept. It would be like buying a car and never changing the oil. Rhodium plating is just like that. Some people will need to have this plating done once every two months and some people may only need this treatment once a year. The mechanic says change your oil every three months OR 3,000 miles, some people put 3,000 miles on their jewelry much faster than others.

To solve this issue, I would either go back to the store at Chesapeake Square and ask for either an exchange or rhodium treatment. The manager there would be willing to do that to help a customer. The management team has changed since 2005, and they are more willing to help their customers.

Consumer Comment They should not be running your credit report

AUTHOR: Kim - (U.S.A.)

They should not be running your credit report to exchange the rings. That makes your score go down everytime they access your credit report! Call the corporate office 912-233-9333 and get customer service. They should be very happy to help as they are in serious bankruptcy and need to keep their customers happy. Stop dealing with the store! Call the homeoffice, located in Savannah Georgia! Good luck!

Observations - It is of a much higher quality and at a lower price

Your ring is probably white gold that has been flashed/dipped in rhodium to give it that bright white color. White gold has a very slight yellow tint to it. Aftermarket mfg process "dip" jobs aren't as good as the mfg's. Don't know what a score has to do with any type of coverage. Went to the mall this afternoon. There are two jewelry stores in the mall. Many more, but I'll use these as an example. Friedman's was jampacked with people. I know some of the people who work and make some of the jewelry in the second store. It is of a much higher quality and at a lower price. There were a few people in the second store. They are closing down several of the Friedman's in town. Why in the world people were buying from Friedman's is beyond me.
