On 9/13/06, I originally took my car in for minor, mostly cosmetic repairs. When I picked my car up on 10/31/06, I discovered a new gash on the right side of the car, which had been carelessly dabbed with touch up paint. When I pointed this out to Brian, instead of acknowledging and apologizing for the damage he proceeded to walk around my car and point out all of its' flaws- the message was, if I already had some door dings (my car is a 1995 model) why should I care about the gash? He implied that I was being unreasonable by asking them to repair the damage that they had done to my car. Then, he agreed to repair the damage.

On 11/3/06, I was phoned by Bruce's Body Shop and told that I could come get my car that day. I spoke with Brian, and Brian informed me that some damage had occurred to the clearcoat on the right side of the car. He said that the car had been repainted in that area before (I have no knowledge of this- had the car for 5 years with no problems) and that the paint job was of poor quality. So, he said, when they masked the car off to prep it for painting, the tape they used had pulled up chunks of clearcoat. But, he said, why don't I leave the car over the weekend and pick it up Monday- they'll fix it up for me so it's not noticeable.

On 11/6/06, I went to pick up my car. They had Brian's twin brother (seriously- they are twin brothers that both work there, but one has blue eyes and the other has hazel.) come out to do a final walk-around with me. There were 2 large spaces of clearcoat missing on the right side of the car, and it was very obvious- it appeared that they had tried to blend in one spot, but completely left the others in a terrible state. Both spots look terrible.

They refused to do anything about it, stating that since the alleged former paint job was not their workmanship, they were not responsible for the clearcoat that they ripped off while masking the car. (again, there is no record of the car being repainted, and there was no damage prior) Brian's brother told me to give Brian a call the following day if I wasn't satisfied.

On 11/7/06, I met with Brian at Bruce's. I explained to Brian my position, and told him that since they had ripped the clearcoat off while masking, they should fix it- but he recanted and said that they had never even taped that part of the car! Brian changed his story and said that the car had been just like that when we brought it in, and that I was lying about it. (I couldn't believe he could lie right to my face like that.) He even said that I had been lying about the gash on right side of the car, but since they were nice guys they repaired it for me. He told me that for $500, he'd fix it. When I refused, he yelled, Then we're done here! and stormed off.

OWNER OF THE 95 TOYOTA CAMRY-LETS GET THE STORY STRAIGHT!

AUTHOR: Bruces Body Shop - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Before you start slandering a business, lets get your story straight. To refresh your memory we did light repairs on the left side of your vehicle. When you brought the vehicle in for repairs we did what we call a walk-around sheet on the vehicle, which you signed and received a copy of. The walk around-sheet is used for documenting prior damages that are unrelated, fuel and mileage. The walk-around sheet that was performed on your vehicle shows several scratches and dents on the right side of your vehicle and was not to be repaired as per your ins. company.

After we repaired the vehicle on the left side, you came in to inspect the vehicle and said it looked great. You then took the vehicle, and a short time later you returned and said we had put a small scratch in your right quarter panel, we checked the walk-around we did on your vehicle and showed you the the scratches and dents on the walk-around sheet. But you insisted that one small scratch out of ten others was not marked on the walk-around sheet. So instead of disputing this with you, we told you we would clean it up for you. We repaired and spotted the right qtr. panel, on the backglass molding where we masked it, the paint peeled on the edge. We explained to you that the roof has been repainted and was peeling in several areas. We also showed you the peeling all the way around the windshield and roof mldgs. in different areas. Again we spotted in the peeled area where we un-masked the car, which was not our work to begin with. When you returned I told you that we had spotted the paint again but it was not guaranteed that it was going to stop the peeling and that the clear coat needs to be stripped on the entire roof and be re-painted to correct this problem.

We also told you that we would work with you on the price to keep the cost down on correcting the problem on your roof, which was never repaired by us in the first place. Shortly after that you took us to small claims court, you presented your case, then we presented ours. The judge said and I quote "That Bruces Body Shop in not responsible for the peeling of your vehicle". And that he felt we went above and beyond what we were responsible for. So for the record, we have been in business for 28 years and went to court one time in those 28 years and won the case, so I think the customers can decide for themselves along with the court system who was correct. If anybody would like to contact or discuss this rebuttal they may contact Bryan, the general manager to address any concerns they may have. 209-948-0712

Old School -- What?

I'm very confused by what you're saying.

You've stated, "They caused the damage, but because the paint was in pitiful shape previously, they're not responsible for the damage they caused."

They caused the damage, thus they're responsible for it, no matter how bad of shape the car was in previously.

Poor Paint

AUTHOR: Old School - (U.S.A.)

I AM THE OWNER OF A COLLISION SHOP. I DO ONLY TOP QUALITY WORK. UNFORTUNATLY A LOT OF SHOP'S DON'T. PAINT PEELING (WHEN NOT SANDED PROPERLY) WHEN MASKED OFF IS A BIG PROBLEM. I HAVE IT HAPPEN OFTEN AND AS RECENT AS DEC 07. USED CAR DEALERS WILL USE CHEAP SHOP'S FOR REPAIRS JUST TO SELL THE CAR. THAT IS PROBBILY WHERE THIS WAS DONE ORIGINALY. I THINK THE SHOP SHOULD HAVE TOOK THE TIME TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THIS AND MAYBE OFFER YOU A GOOD DEAL ON REPAIRING IT. IF YOU DO HAVE THIS REPAIRED IN THE FUTURE, MAKE SURE THE BAD PAINT IS REMOVED AND CKECK ADJACENT PANEL'S FOR PAINT WORK. CHOOSING SMALLER SHOP'S WITH ONLY A FEW EMPLOYEE'S WILL HAVE BETTER QUALITY AND BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE. HOPE THIS WILL HELP. OLD SCHOOL BODY MAN.
