Cayman Airways Price Gouging During Hurrican Dean Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
*Author of original report: Cayman Airways Reimburses Customers
*Consumer Suggestion: You Are Right
Because of Hurricane Dean I was forced to end my vacation in Grand Cayman prematurely. I couldn't get a flight on my airline (American Airlines), so I got a seat on Cayman Airways. I was charged $650 for this flight.
When I got home I looked on the internet for the "normal " prices for Cayman Airways for a flight from Grand Cayman to Miami. The posted price was $232 for a one way flight.
Cayman Airways took advantage of me and many other people during a crisis. This is price gouging. Unethical business practices like this should be made known and companies called to account for their actions.

Cayman Airways Reimburses Customers

I contacted a news agency in Grand Cayman about the "price gouging" of my airline ticket with Cayman Airways.
I asked if they had done any investigative stories about this issue. They had contacted Cayman Airways about other complaints and Cayman Airways said it was a problem with their reservation system.
They told me that Cayman Airways was reimbursing customers for the inflated charges. They told me to call Cayman Airways if I had not received a call from the airline yet.
I called Cayman Airways and they are issuing me a $383 dollar reimbursement for my ticket.
I complimented Cayman Airways for doing the right thing in this issue. However I question if it was just a problem with their "reservation system" as they claim.

I checked and the price for a one way the next day is $243. This is price-gouging to the max and does not encourage future travel on Cayman Airlines. I would write a letter not only to the airline but also to the Tourist Association and the local newspaper. It will be interesting to see what response you get. At least you will ensure that local residents and the Cayman-based airline get your reaction to the rip-off.
