I received the same type of collection notice from AFNI several months ago. Knowing full well that I didn't owe any such bill (which they claimed was from a previous address in 1993, talk about digging), I sent a debt validation letter to AFNI.......and I've heard nothing since.
I've found that you have to carefully examine every single notice you get, because this practice has become so common. In the last year, I've received 4 notices from collectors, and I've disputed every one of them (one of them was for a phone line that my late husband opened in 2001. Another was for medical treatment that my late husband sought in 2003. Well and good, if he hadn't died in the nineties, huh? lol). I don't mind paying whats mine, but I'm not going to just pay whatever someone says that I owe on the assumption that they're right.
Just dispute it, then make sure it's not listed on your credit reports (not that you'll get much help from the credit burueas to correct mistakes such as this). Good Luck!
