I wanted to buy a christmas gift for my sister, an avid mountain climber. I thought that Chessler Books would be the ideal place to shop for a book or unique mountaineering gift however, while trying to figure out what might be a good gift for her I made the mistake of asking the owner a few questions (I admit I dont know everything about mountain climbing, and perhaps he would be able to point out a few things for me), what I got was rude insulting remarks in return. After that, he swore at me and I left.

I ended up going elsewhere and getting something that was just as good. I would stay away from this place.

in defense of chessler

AUTHOR: monkeyboyrob - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 21, 2010

i am sorry to hear that people have had trouble with e-bay orders from chessler.  online commerce can be a most frustrating matter, especially when one feels ignored after a dissatisfying transaction.  i wish, however, to present the contrary experience:

i have ordered from chessler over a period of two dozen years, from back in the hardcopy catalog days of the eighties, through my first online order five days ago (which i received one day ago, after a weekend- that is an order friday night that arrived tuesday morning!).  in all of this time, i have had no problems, and only pleasant surprises (a few years ago a couple of john long paperbacks were signed, even though i did not order them that way, nor was i charged a premium for them).

in the last six years i have probably spent two hundred dollars on books from chessler.  to extract this paltry sum from my monkey strong clutches, michael chessler has spent ten to fifteen hours on the phone with me, getting me sorted on authors, titles, and making notes to call me when some silly request i have made for a specific cover or edition can be filled.  i have never had to wait more than a few days to hear back on any oddball order.

if the man comes off as curt, reserve your judgement for a few moments of conversation, or talk to him again, later in the day-  you will find that he is helpful, informative, and has a passion for the medium he deals in.

for the record, michael chessler does not know me from adam- maybe he thought i was someone he knew?  i think he just wanted to make sure i was getting the books that i was looking for.

do not let a few (bogus?) negative reviews keep you from ordering from the world's greatest resource of new, used, and collectable climbing and outdoor literature.

chessler books is a square deal.

Below are actual comments from his customers on E-Bay. As we all know, the very system of E Bay is set up so that both parties involved give the other person a rating that makes them sound like they are the best thing since sliced bread. Every once in a while, a customer is honest. Below are what the HONEST and ACTUAL customers wrote about him.

False report

AUTHOR: Chessler Books - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 22, 2008

This person says that after being treated rudely she "left". This is impossible. We do not have a store that is open to the public, and have no customers visiting our premises. I do not recall an incident of this type, and I think this is a false report, perhaps prompted by and in collusion with the previous report by another alleged complaint just a few days ago. She does not claim to have actually purchased anything, so even if what she says has some truth to it, being talked to in a way she did not like, she was not "ripped off" by her own admission.
