July 10 2010: I bought a used convertible from a local used car dealership. I am handicapped, and found something locally I could afford. In finalizing the paperwork, I asked the owner if there was anything I needed to know about, as this was the most I could pay on a used car, and my disability makes it hard to get around to hitch rides, do repairs, pay for repairs. I made it clear, that I expected that I was buying a used car, but I didn't want to have to do fix anything for awhile. Coast Auto Sales assured me I was paying High Blue Book because it was such a great car. I asked specifically if the roof leaked, he assured me it did not.

No sooner did I get it home, than a visitor alerted me the brake lights didn't work. I immediately had to replace bulbs and the brake light switch. The trunk lid didn't stay up and needed lifts replaced. I also noticed the "service engine" light was going on and off. I hadn't had the car a week, and was unhappy that all this was happening so soon. The dealer asked that I take it to the shop across the street from him. I asked this business to also check the brakes, as they were noisy and inefficient. The auto shop got authorization from Coast Auto Sales to fix the problem. They'd however forgotten to check the brakes. Soon after I got a call from the dealer, and was told that the dmv paperwork didn't go through, as it was purchased from out of the county,  and needed a special "smogging"  that no one did in the area. By this time, the "check engine light had come right back on, I'd had the chance to take the car through a car wash (it leaked like a sieve). The convertible roof would go "down" only, and no longer went "up", and the car needed a brake job. I was livid. I sent registered letters to Coast Auto Sales. Tom, the owner, called and asked me to come in, as he said he would do 'whatever it took' to make me happy. I went in with another witness, and told him I was there to give the car back. Tom at Coast Auto, made it very clear, he did not want this car back. I re-iterated the paper work was improperly filled out, I was angry about all the immediate repairs. The owner refused to take the car back.

So, I left unsatisfied. I sought legal council, who assured me the dealer was at fault with the smogging.  I'd sent demand letters, but they were ignored.  My physical disability, and the added expenses of all the car repairs and inflated sticker price, made going though a court battle too much. The registration was about to expire, and a week and half ago, I was forced to allow Coast Auto take my car to smog it, so I would have a valid  legal registration, so I could travel the highways without being ticketed and hassled; ending up in court explaining (Who wants to go to court). Coast Auto Sales took advantage of my disability, and played it out.  Up until then, I was driving with no paperwork on the car. When Coast Auto sales returned my car, I asked where it was smogged (as it was rather quickly done),  he said it was done at the shop across the street from his car lot. Suddenly the out of area smogging wasn't necessary. It made me very leery, as I knew a car couldn't be smogged if the "check engine" light was on.

I've since paid for brakes, roof hydraulic repairs, window repairs, crank shaft position sensor, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Well, the check engine light is still on. Heating and cooling do not work. I have photographed the check engine light dates numerous times.  I took it to many reputable shops in town that hooked it to a computer that diagnosed 2 things that could cause it. In this past week, I paid for those repairs, and the "check engine light" is still on, and the car runs worse than ever. I have to drive my daughter to school, and many times, the car came to a stop.  This car has been to the shop at least 5 times, with numerous repairs in between.  People he contracts work out to, gave me contacts to turn him in, so he seems to have a reputation.
I just don't do enough driving to quantify the repairs, I know it's may seem irrelevant.  I am, and have been concerned the smog issue, and that  the "check engine" light is continually on,  and this dealer has taken advantage of an obviously handicapped person, I cannot be stranded and walking. I'm concerned this business might have hook ups to by pass the law. I really don't know how this car passed smog.

Dear Mr. or Mrs. Money Bags, or whatever your name is
(I couldn't find you in any directory, and do not know you)

If you indeed can afford that many cars, I guess, you should be beholding.

However, as for my situation, this car has been a nightmare. My documentation more than compensates for any "dimentia" you allege I have.

Numerous local mechanics looked at this car. I also consulted with other mechanics out of the area to be sure I did not have biased or skewed information. No one could understand how it passed smog, and urged me to get Tom to take it back.  Because he is a used car dealer, many do repairs for him. It is just the nature of business in a small town.
Sadly, I could not get Tom to meet me on any fair ground. Because of the disability the State of California, and any four year old could see I have, I knew what I needed in a car and what my physical and financial limitations were. This car was not what I was led to believe I asked for.

Tom made it very clear, he did not "want this car back". (I have witnesses to EVERY conversation with Tom) All mechanics told me the same outcome because of the sensors. I was not in any financial position to do anything else. Tom got all my money. Aside from all the repairs aforementioned, the car broke down again. The sensors should never have allowed it to pass smog. As of early June, I was without a car again, AAA has the towing record, the mechanic got another $300 and I can't afford the $1000 to fix it.
I was housebound 3 weeks, and thanks to the benevolence of a local firefighter and his family, they gave up one of their family cars, so my daughter and I could get around.
Yours is a rouge report.  It just doesn't matter, I have enough information, and documentation. Someone is doing something really wrong in Buellton.

great car dealership

I have bought three cars from tom shean and counting. He has been nothing but honest and fair with me. For example I bought a car a couple years ago and recently got into a car accident and did a lot of damage to my car. Tom towed my car 80 miles to have it fixed by one of his repair shops he uses. he didnt charge me anything to tow my car and paid for all the gas and got me a great deal on repairs. i had my car repairs appraised at one shop and it was 9000. Tom got it fixed for 3000. And spent all this time doing this for me and he got nothing in return.  So reading this report really upsets me that someone would portray him as a bad guy. I know the lady that posted this and she repeatedly says she is handicapped and when she has no signs of it. so when she says he took advantage of her because she is handicapped is a lie. the only thing she might be handicapped with is dimensia because tom wouldnt do any of these things on purpose,

Confronted Owner Again

AUTHOR: Burned in Buellton - (United States of America)

As a timeline update.....   Tom Shean of Coast Auto Sales picked up my car and took it to be smogged
2/7/2011. When it came back to my house 2/8/2011, it had the same miss, and the "check engine light" was still on.
Since I was tired of talking to Tom Shean of Coast Auto to know avail, 2/12/2011..I had my car taken to a local repair shop, who verified the check engine light as being on an ran a scope on it. Further, I took it to a second repair shop,  on 2/18/2011 who specializes in Chryslers. They verified what the first shop said.  I had the "smog report" faxed to an out of town specialist for review. It is his professional opinion that my car was not the car smogged. I finally called Tom of Coast Auto Sales after being unable to find him at his shop on several attempts on the 25th. Tom said to come see him the following Monday over the weekend, 2/26/2011, I took the car to the local repair shop, again, had it verified, the check engine light was on and they scanned and diagnosed 6 codes as to why the light was on. I took the car back to Tom of Coast Auto Sales on Monday. He claims to have his own scanner, found only one code, but tried to tell me, the check engine light was basically my fault.
I have been keeping records of problems with this car since I drove it off the lot last July. The check engine light was on at purchase (Tom said he paid for something to be done at the repairs shop across the street, but the light came back on by the time I got the car home. Because of the extreme difficulty getting around, I sent registered letters with my concerns. Here is one of them after I spent much time at the dealership trying to hash things out :

Dear Tom/Coast Auto Sales

September 7, 2010

As per the conversations I have had
with you in the last month, here is the breakdown of grievances I
told you I would send on the 2000 Chrysler Sebring that is sitting at
my house.
The one thing I specifically asked you
about (while I was writng out a check for just under 4,0000k,) was,
if the convertible top leaked.

The first trip through the car wash was
provided a disturbing answer. The price quoted me to fix the top was
approximately $1300.

Problems with sale, within less than a
week of ownership, was the need to replace brake light(s), and the
brake light switch, (I have the parts), I also had to have the back
window flaps glued down to the back window, and replaced the trunck
lift supports.

I asked you about the engine light
being on, was sent to Jensons. I got in to see them about a week
later,
I'm not quite sure what they did, as
the engine was still missing, and, the service engine light came back
on with a vengeance. I'd asked them to check the brakes, but they
forgot, but I'm not sure if it's the brakes or the bearings.

You later called about the smogging,
but by then, I had just had too much trouble with Jensens and the
car, and have not driven it since.
There are too many things wrong with
it, that I directly adressed and otherwise. I told you I needed to
sell my truck, get out from big monthly payments, and am not
prepared to take on any vehicle as a hobby. Especially having paid
what you called high blue book that you were proud of.

The things you listed as ammenities
didn't even work.
No air conditioning, the heater has
only one speed.... blast.
The leather interior is damaged.
Those things, if decent, might be part
of the equipment that qualifies the pride in the higher sticker
price, or “value”.

I do not hate you, as I don't even know
you. I was aggravated that you'd asked what I expected with a car
with such high mileage.

I bought a used car, for almost 4,000,
and am willing to take care of reasonable maintenance. I was not
however prepared to drive it off the lot, and immediately into the
repair shop.... and have it have a future there for some time before
it was even road worthy.

I had to backpeddal on selling my
truck, which is now costing me the insurance bill of full coverage on
two vehicles, and I've invested obviously time and money to this
point.

I cannot afford to do any more repairs
to this car.

Denise Jones
