I asked DC Movers for an estimate to move my property from Yellowknife to Toronto (3370 miles) in May 2016 and subsequently signed a contract with the estimator/owner Darcy Blampied. Once my items arrived in Toronto I was informed by the second carrier with whom I had no agreement that the costs would be approximately $3000. higher than the original estimate and my belongings would not be released until this amount was paid via a certified cheque, bank draft or cash. I asked for substantiation for the increased cost and was provided none but a doctored "bill of lading" marked up by hand with ball point pen attesting to additional wieght.

I reported this incident to the BBB of Calgary Alberta because Yellowknife has no consumer protection and this proved to be a waste of time given the BBB is dependant on business memberships and is not interested in persecuting any business or even reporting same to the public. BBB closed this complaint in favour of the business saying I was informed of the reason for the extra charges and that information was sufficient justification for them.

Clearly the business originally low balled the estimate to win the contract for services and once won and my property taken into thier posession thay could extort whatever "mark up" they wished to impose. This is "extortion" at a level that does not attract legal attention, and I say so knowing that pursuit in the courts for this type of transgression would be very expensive and time consuming given the large distances involved, but is never the less extortion.

This particular transgressor, Darcy Blampied, does not seem to concern himself with these types of reports by way of complaint, primarily because of the remote location of this business, but I suggest these practices, once exposed will become known in that small community and when the truth comes out the business will be forced to redeem itself or close.
