At the end of November, Devin Harris dba Great Danes of The Ozarks sold my husband and I a puppy with a broken jaw and fractured skull.  We were unaware of the severity of the injuries until we took the puppy to our veterinarian days later.

Upon pick up, he claimed the puppy had been bitten by a larger dog but stated that he took her to a veterinarian and gave my husband a clear plastic bag with 5 Cephalexin pills (an antibiotic) and instructed my husband to give the puppy 1 pill a day.

We were excited to receive a new puppy and didn't think to question that the antibiotic was provided to us in a clear plastic bag instead of a prescription bottle. (Hindsight is 20/20.)  Our veterinarian later confirmed that is not the proper dosage for that medication and that, had a veterinarian prescribed the medication, the proper dosage would have been 3 pills a day.

My husband and I did try to speak to Mr. Harris about the puppy's condition and, to our utter shock and disbelief, he turned hostile immediately.   We've later come to find out that Mr. Harris never took the puppy to a veterinarian and believes himself to have sufficient veterinary medical knowledge to care for injured animals on his own, which is a violation of  7 U.S.C. §2143, which requires breeders to have injured animals under veterinary care.

In researching Mr. Harris further, we found that he has had pet businesses in California and Nevada shut down for animal abuse and neglect.   At this time, Mr. Harris is operating under the name of Great Danes of The Ozarks, where he has 10 to 13 adult dogs being bread to produce several litters of puppies (which can be 5-13 puppies per litter) for which he is selling at a price approximately between $1,300 and $1,500 per puppy and claims to be AKC certified.

However, I have found that Great Danes of The Ozarks is not a registered business with the Missouri Secretary of State, nor is any other business entity by Devin Harris registered to be operating as a puppy breeder.

His most recent businesses to have their licenses permanently revoked were called Pet Central, Inc. in July 2019 in Nevada and Noah's Ark Pet Store and/or Noah's Ark Puppies in Joplin, MO in October 2019.

Veterinary Evidence

AUTHOR: Teresa - (United States)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 08, 2020

I decided to go ahead and share our veterinary report.  In his rebuttal, Mr. Harris states that the puppy suffered a hairline fracture that had healed.  That is an outright lie.  As you can see in our vet report, the puppy had a broken mandible, which is denoted to have been suffered prior to pickup due to the large calcification of bone that is painful.  The report also shows the "prescription" was in a clear plastic bag with an incorrect dosage.

We approached Mr. Harris calmly about the entire situation and asked him for vet records several times and he repeatedly refused to provide them. As a business owner, would you not feel terrible and show you had nothing but good intentions?  Not Mr. Harris.  He became immediately hostile after we returned the puppy.  The reason we returned her is that he said he would have his surgeon look at her and if he also could not fix the issue that she would be euthanized.

The fact that he states she is alive still makes me cry because she is re-breaking her jaw every day.  Feel free to contact my veterinarian to cooberate our story.  He is furious with Mr. Harris as well.  We have nothing to hide while Mr. Harris still refuses to show any evidence that a veterinarian treated this puppy's injuries.  Our Vet can be contacted as follows:  James E. Hale, DVM in Washington, MO - you can find his number on Google, I'm not sure if I am allowed to include it in the report.

Additionally, Mr. Harris's statement of calling the police is also a lie.  There are no charges filed against me and I have never been contacted by the policy on his behest, as he claimed to me would happen.  That was another intimidation tactic he employed to force me to stop trying to resolve this terrible situation.

I would be happy to release our entire conversation showing his hostility and arrogance to the press.  No report would have been filed if Mr. Harris actually tried to remedy the situation; but, he did not.  Instead, he just became hostile and threatening.  I am filing this report any and everywhere I can to alert others to this man's atrocities and hope to be able to rescue the remaining animals from his "care".

Evidence is easy to find in 2020

To anyone who would like to give Mr. Harris the benefit of the doubt, please Google his name and look on Case.net. You can EASILY find that his pet store in Missouri was shut down based on complaints filed by his employees for the treatment of animals and you can confirm with the [very public] Missouri Secretary of State that his business license was permanently revoked.

You will also find on case.net that in 2015 he was arrested and fined for doing business without a license back then. It's not hard to confirm that he is still doing it now with the Missouri Secretary of State. Mr. Harris will also become hostile immediately upon trying to converse with him and tell you that you are harassing him if you respond, even if you're responding in a completely professional manner.

He also will refuse to give you his attorney's contact information for further correspondence when he no longer wishes to speak to you. I implore you - do not do business with this man. My husband and I are clearly not the only ones who have had issues with him. You will also find several other cases filed against him by former customers.

I'm sure he'll threaten to file harassment charges against me again for going public with our story, even though I have only ever tried to have amicable conversations with him.

First and foremost this will be my first and only comment on this matter as I have veterinary documents that serve as evidence to the contrary to this entire complaint. Before I address any of the pertinent complaint regarding the purchase of a Great Dane puppy by this client let me put to rest the fabrications they have mentioned regarding prior business.

I have never even had a business in California, have been party to any business that has had a business licensed permanently revoked, or any business charges with animal abuse or neglect. This lie was used merely as a tactic to undermine our credibility and give more weight to their complaint.

As far as the puppy sold to the client Evelyn, she was injuried prior to her departure. I consulted with my veterinarian who gave me instructions. The client was made fully aware of her getting hurt prior to taking her home and agreed to have them see their vet to determine if anything further needed to be done with Evelyn.

The statement that they took the puppy to their vet days later is an outright lie. In fact the client neglected ANY vet care whatsoever for over 2 weeks. After nearly 3 weeks they finally went to the vet who noted a small hairline fracture in the pups jaw.

Their vet wanted to euthanize the pup immediately to which I vehemently rejected. The client asked to return the pup and be put on my list for the next available litter to which we agreed to even though they had neglected this puppy!

Apparently the client had a change of heart overnight. The next day the wife of my client proceeded to use her position at a law firm to harass and intimidate us into returning the pup to them so they could terminate its life.

Mind you, the puppy has been seen by our veterinarian who firmly disagreed with the clients vet’s choice of treatment. They noted a prior fracture that had healed and said their was zero damage to her skull. To this day the pup is happy and healthy and fully healed from her injury.

We NEVER condone termination of life for absolutely no reason without exhausting every avenue available and find it strange that this client is obsessed with ending this pups life. Repeatedly they asked us to return Evelyn so she could be euthanized and called us liars when we stated that our vet disagreed with theirs.

The harassment became so serious we had to call the police and file a report against the client. Thank God we didn’t follow the advice of the clients vet as to this day Evalyn is still a happy, healthy, well adjusted puppy with a fantastic temperament and vigor for life.

We are still confused by this clients desire to terminate her life. We provide a comprehensive health warranty to all our clients that offers many benefits that protect them. This contract states a pup must me examined by a licensed veterinarian 4 days prior to purchase.

Even though they violated the contract we offered to give them the full benefit of the warranty as a customer service. We are sorry they became disgruntled with the contract they agreed to however we will not be persuaded by threats and harassment to a client who clearly breached the contract by neglecting to have this puppy seen by a vet until weeks after her purchase.
