I have personally known an employee of the company who without a doubt trades meat for drugs. When I informed the manager of these activities he threatened to call the police on me! As far as the product, I know that what they sell in the seafood department is a rip-off. Two pounds of shrimp for $25.00 is a little outrageous. It seems that the company endorses drug use with in which is an outrage! These people are using company trucks to do drug deals! If you see them in your area you should call the police as most of them have a warrents or are high on drugs!

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Some True, Some Not

AUTHOR: Former Manager - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, November 24, 2008

I was an independant contractor of Direct USA and then an Employee (only management are employees). I worked for Direct USA for around two years and built a loyal clientele by dealing openly and honestly with my customers. I had customers that did not like the product. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM RECEIVED A REFUND IF THEY COMPLAINED. However, most of my customers were satisfied. These are not the best steaks you will ever eat. However if cooked as directed, they are not bad, and I repeatedly served them and sold them to friends and family.
As for the above stated drug use, it is strictly forbidden by the company and contractors sign paperwork to that end. The company also has strict rules on who may drive their trucks and errs on the side of not allowing contractors to drive if there is a history of speeding or reckless driving, or any history of drug or alcohol use whil driving. The company hires as many individuals as possible due to the high turnover of contractors. Those that take the job seriously develop regular customers and do well. Those that act foolish and present the unprofessional aspects listed above make it that much harder for honest people to make a living in this manner. As for business licenses, our store was directly across from the Department of Agricutlure, and we were regularly inspected for violations. We always passed with flying colors. Local mobile sales licenses were prominently displayed on trucks. Licenses from neighboring cities were paid for by contractors then reimbursed by the company.
I belive that the failing of this company stems from a reluctance to actively seek more professional representatives. While drug use is strictly forbidden, it is not tested for. The fact that contractors are NOT employees gives them freedom from certain regulations and places the onus on them to file their own taxes. The thing is, if they were to keep track of fuel costs and meals alone, they would make a substantial tax refund, even considering self employment taxes are higher. As for the prices, contractors are given a cost and encouraged to make what profit they can through negotiation and bulk sales. Some managers are more willing than others to allow the rules to be bent. Managers are pressured to produce numbers. Those that are successful, get paid well. It is highly competitive. I will not claim that I did not knowingly break a rule here and there in the name of production, but it was always MY butt on the line.
The bottom line is this. There is certainly more than a little room for improvement in the hiring practices and willingness of the company to present a less than professional image at times. However these failings hurt the company more than the customer, because most people will trust their instinct. When they are presented a situation they feel is shady, they walk away. If you paid several hundred dollars to buy several cases of meat you have not tried or heard of from a ragamuffin in a beat up truck with a freezer that wouldn't close properly, who is really to blame? A fool and his money are soon parted. If you were my customer, better than 75% of you would be calling me back for more.

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Just another door to door ripoff

I too used to work for Direct USA. I now work in law enforcement. It's a good thing that they no longer operate in my town, if they did, I assure everyone reading this that I would do everything I could to bust them. A good many of their employees DO use and sell drugs. Many of them are driving without a license and some are actually running from the law. The product they sell, is at best, sub-par, and at worst, will get people sick. Yes, it has gotten folks sick in the past. Anyone who says anything different is lying. Really, I have no reason to get on here and say things that are not true. They never directly "screwed me over", but I have seen what they do to sell their product. It goes far beyond just price-gouging and lying. Most towns have soliciting laws, and these folks simply ignore them. They work without business licenses, and do not file taxes. If you see them in the neigbourhood, the best thing to do is take town their license plate number, and call your local authorities. Talk to the police about the laws in your town, and they will explain that this company is known for breaking the law and ripping people off.

Not true at all

The things stated in the above comp. are very untrue and off base. Direct usa is a well run co. and things like this are not allowed in any of the offices around the country. I worked for them for about 3 years and got to see the country traveling from office to office and have never seen anything like that happen. If anything like this was going on it would not be tolerated and action would have been taken to take care of this problem. Direct USA is a nation wide corp. with very good products and from what I have seen its top priority is its customers in making sure they are well taken care of.

One last thing do you think any company would be this successful if it was run by drug addicts... I don't think so. Just think about what you say be for you go saying things like this about anyone because by doing this you are messing with peoples jobs and how they support their families. So just think befor you speak.
