(Product Name: Distinct Advantage) I received a phone call telling me I was eligible for various free offers, including $400 in airfare, which as someone who will be visiting Canada soon and is on a very low budget, interested me but also made me a bit suspicious.
The salesperson was extremely pushy and wouldn't take no for an answer. They told me there was an ongoing commitment ($150 up front plus $50 a month, or something) and that made me uncomfortable, but I was assured that, once I received their package in the mail, I could cancel easily and keep the free offers.
Moreover, I was not supposed to be charged until two weeks after receiving the package. So I shrugged and said yes, as the salesperson made this the path of least resistance; I figured maybe there'd be a coupon or two I could use.
I have not received the package, and in fact it's only been about two weeks since I got this call. Yet this week they billed me for $60 I never agreed to at all, and attempted to bill me the $150 in addition, but were thwarted because their first charge had reduced my bank balance to zero. (They had also made a long-distance offer I should mention. I received a calling card, and called to cancel that service, without incident... so far).
It turns out this is a well-known scam . There are many different names this company goes by, all of which are traceable to a small telemarketing office in Florida going by the above Suntasia name. I am not the first person to not receive the package (in fact, I now suspect it doesn't exist) nor the first person to be charged for something over and above what he agreed to. This is a scam, pure and simple.

How to scam a scammer
AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

I know how to pay these scam companies back were it hurts the most. Why not fight fire with fire. You can easily return the favor to them with junk mail, SPAM, telemarketing calls, etc. They could end up getting thousands of calls, spam, junk mail, etc. I have a junk mail e-mail address, pay as you go phone and PO Box I used them to test this idea out. I received over a thousand e-mails, 8 calls and 15 junk mail items in one day from filling out information on a contest /survey/ freebie site. I had to cancel all of them after a week. Think about it if enough people did the same to these scammers it would really slow them down, waste time, and maybe even overload their servers, mailboxes and phone lines.
If you don't have their information, personal and business here is how to get it for free. I did get the CFO's info though and it is listed below.
Do a reverse lookup on the company. There are many options available; superpages, switchboard.com, reunion.com and jobsites. Scam company job postings on HotJobs, Monster, Careerbuilder, etc. they are always the same. They usually have to provide a woking e-mail address.
If you still can't find a working e-mail address you can download a e-mail spider from a site. Tarantuala is a good one but there are many more. They automatically do a search on a designated website and pull e-mail addresses from them that are not visable via regular browsing. Almost always a corporation has an admin, hr, info, tech, contact, contacts, e-mail address and usually the main companies employees use their first name initial with the last name @theircompany. Sometimes a . seperates the two.
To make absolute sure you have the right person call them from a pay phone or pay as you go phone.
Use their own sales tactics against them.
Example: Mr. Booth I was given your name as a reference for legal service. I heard you were a graduate of Baylor Law school (info given on corporate site). I am from Texas originally and I prefer using Baylor lawyers when I can. If the Answer has something to do with him being a lawyer, then give one of the affiliates of Suntasia as a reference or another executives name. You don't want to give the main company or he might catch on to quick. This can be reworked a little to work against anyone that ripped you off.
Here is an example of a successful search on Donald Booth the shady Lawyer who is keeping this company, Suntasia Marketing viable.

Thank you for letting me know all that. As I hinted in the last paragraph of the Report above, I already knew much of that, but I'm sure it will be handy to have it all in one place.
I am going to change my bank account number today if possible, and I have reported these people to the FTC and (for all the good I expect it to do) the BBB, the latter with a long and somewhat tongue-in-cheek list of what I would accept as recompense. I have also posted similar reports in a couple of other places in addition to ROR. Do you have any other suggestions for actually getting my money back, as opposed to merely protecting myself from future withdrawls by this company?

The Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist is currently investigating this company. This is not the first time Suntasia has been caught. Click below to see the outcome of the investigation back in 2000 by the then Attorney General Bob Butterworth.

The information I have posted is to help those that don't know who's behind this scam. If you have any more questions, please read some of the older posts in this forum to give you more insight or go to Google and type in the search box ?Suntasia Marketing?. You can find more information about this company and their questionable business tactics by just surfing the net.
I have recently inquired about the current investigation on Suntasia with the Florida Attorney Generals office and found out that this company has hired an outside law firm to handle their mess. That in itself is saying something about these crooks.
It is a sad day when the people who run this sham as well as those who work there can't seem to admit that they have a serious problem on their hands. As for the investigation it was told to me that the spotlight will remain on them for good which means if they continue to screw up it will cost more than any fine levied against them. I believe refunds could be coming to those victimized by these crooks like in 2000. For now though Suntasia's lawyers might just work out a deal to save face.
