We bought a home in early 2004 and had a second mortgage. In 2005, we refinanced with a new lender and consolodated our second and first mortgages and have all the paperwork (of course). Sadly, in early 2007 we lost our home in foreclosure. We moved from Missouri to Florida and rented a home for one year. We then moved again to another rental home in Florida (in a better school district) and still live there.
Yesterday, we got a call from one of our old neighbors from our first rental house that we still keep in contact with saying that he had received a call from ANOTHER neighbor that we barely knew. The neighbor that we barely knew said they had received a call AT WORK from a person that said they were an "investigator" for DCF (which usually stands for DIVISION OF CHILDREN and FAMILIES..you know the people who INVESTIGATE child abuse allegations among other things!!!).....NOT DCS....our former neighbor has it on her voicemail...btw..we have 3 children. They said they needed to talk to this person because they were trying to locate us regarding an INVESTIGATION!!!!
We got the call and immediately were completly PANICKED as you can imagine. It is the WORST call immaginable to think that DCF is investigating you as a parent!! We got the number and IMMEDIATELY called...at first the person who answered just acted VERY RUDELY and my husband kept saying is this DCF?? and she would say YES and kept trying to get my husbands social security number...finally my husband said "is this DIVISION OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES???" and she said no..but then it took SEVERAL more times for her to FINALLY tell my husband that it was DCS (not F) and what it stood for...Diversified Collection Services.
Then..without getting his SS#, she proceeds to tell my husband that we owe $149,000 on our second mortgage and that she saw we were getting ready to be foreclosed on...husband said "no..we were foreclosed on over 2 years ago and we did NOT have a second mortgage at the time of forclosure and have the paperwork to PROVE it'!!!
She then told my husband that he was wrong..that the police were going to come pick him up for court in 48 hours, that he would go to jail, that his wages would be garnished...etc etc etc...husband hung up on her and CALLED OUR LAWYER...spent $200 bascially to get told that none of the things she said were true or valid..and that the "debt" was not on our credit report even....
When husband tried to call back, the person that answered DEMANDED his SS# again and when he would not give it..they hung up!!
We are contacting Federal Trade Commission in the morning!

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! diversified collection services
AUTHOR: Rosalea - (U.S.A.)

Got a call today from diversified collection services to MY CELL number that I used to call them in the first place. They said I could avoid going to court if I would work out an agreement with them after asking me my name and of course I said it. They then said please give me your SS# so I can make sure I'm speaking to the right person...right you call me and ask for my SS#...unreal. They said they were going to take me to court and sherrif would be around in 48 hours if I did not work something out. I said ok...if I owe you prove it and send me something in the mail, which I have NEVER had anything sent to me! Otherwise I guess you go ahead and take me to court but do not call me again.
After off the phone, I was upset because I have my payoff information on my 2nd in my hands!! So I went forward and turned them into the Attourny General in FL and in CA both and they have MANY MANY compliants on them and that this company runs under 5 different names! I was also advised to turn them into financial Regulation in fl which I did. I was also advised to turn them into our county Sherrifs Department, which I did and the officer called the number I had for diversified collection services and they answered hello and he had to asked 2 or 3 times to get who the company was only to be hung up on! He called back and they would not answer. He called again before he left and they answered, he gave his last name, badge number and they asked for his SS#, when he said I cannot give this to you, I just want the....click hang up! My advise to all is to make sure you contact your attourny general in your state and CA, plus your states financial Regulation and if they called your work, threaten you and have never sent you anything to show you owe something they are trying to collect on make the report! I did, I know I lost my house, I know I re-fi to 1 loan and I know who they say the represent is NOT who my loan was with nor on my credit report saying I owe someone $149,000 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dateline did a story on scams like this and we saw it the very night this first happen to us! Most of those collecting as Dateline pointed out are thugs with very bad records...that is why it is important to contact your local police and file a report.

Don't waste your time with the FTC:
Send them a letter via Certified Mail + Return Receipt stating:
Per the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I am requesting that you cease all communications with me about this alleged. This letter is being time stamped via Certified Mail and I can confirm receipt. I will pursue each subsequent phone call from your office with a $1,000 per incident penalty for Fair Debt Collection Practices Act violations

I would send this collection agency a letter to cease and desist in trying to contact you in any way as they are breaking the law. Also in the letter deman verification of the debt. This will usually stop them cold. If they continue to bother you after you executed your legal right not to be contacted or after you have asked for verification of the debt, sue them for $1,000 allowed by Federal law plus ask for the maximum amount of small claims you can sue for, for punitive dames in small claims court. Also file a complaint with your state attorney general and your state bank and consumer protection agencies.
