If you are a gambler, you need to read this. I have read everything I can get my hands on about the subject and feel I am extremely well informed about what I am about to tell you.
First some background, I live in Las Vegas and have resisted the temptation to gamble for many years, but I had read that money can be made by conservatively gambling on either the craps table or through sports betting. Personal experience has shown me that the craps table involves alot of time standing at a casino with some expectation of coming out ahead on betting the pass line only. Whereas sports betting involved picking a winner against a posted spread or moneyline. Against a point spread, one only has to win about 53% of the time to break even. Money line is a different story which only fellow gamblers that are reading this understand.
Anyway, I am an avid sports fan and know that any particular event can be decided by the bounce of a ball, or a mishandle, or a foul, or whatver. Therefore, I did not completely trust my own judgement and decided to seek the help of a "professional" sports handicapping service. I chose Doc's Sports Service.
Now Doc's sports Service touts that they have been in business for over 35 years and they provide winning sports picks consistently and claim that you will be up many, many, many units if you just follow their system. I found this not to be the case.
I chose one of his handicappers named Robert Ferringo. I checked them out on the web and all searches led right back to their site. How great this guy is, how he just knocks them out, all these supposed winning streaks, written articles on other websites, etc, etc, etc Ad Nauseum. Needless to say, it was not enough home work.
I jumped in and paid for a subscription to the second half of the MLB season $420. I bet the man's selections religously through the end of the season. I lost $40 (round numbers here) in August, I lost $225 in September, and I won $192 in October. A total loss with the price of the subscription of $493.00. Oh, well, just like the stock market right? That's why they call it gambling right? Well, since I hadn't lost too much betting his baseball picks, I figured I'd sign up for the football package, I mean the guy should know what he's doing in football right? I mean there are less games and he's got more time to do his homework right? Wrong.
So I pay $695 for all college and pro football picks through the Super Bowl. I win $44 in August on the exhibition season, Lose $90 in September, Lose $427 in October, Lose $492 in November (I stopped playing the picks in November out of disgust, but kept tracking them since I had paid for the subscription), Won $183 in December, and won $100 on the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Loss of almost $1300.
That's almost $1800 lost on the services of a professional. Sour grapes right?
No, I knew what I was getting into and that is why I am writing this now. Beware of anyone touting themselves as experts or winners. Anyone that says they win more than 58-59% of the time is trying to rip you off.
I believed these people knew what they were doing. But... I ignored the red flags.
Robert Ferringo did not "flat bet" his selections, He would tell you to bet $10 on one game and $40 on another. The $40 bet would more often than not lose. Many $50,$60,$70 losers also.
The handicappers web site was filled with ads for On Line Off Shore sports books. The odds and spreads often changed at these books (and in Vegas) as soon as the handicapper released his own selections, thus the handicapper would record more winnings even though it was impossible for the customer to get the same numbers. (If you bet on sports, you know what I am talking about).
Ferringo distorts his numbers. He posts what he thinks he won and skews the math with statements like "3 out of 4 winning days" when what really happened is he won $10 3 days and lost $50 on the 4th.
Doc's also publishes a guarantee on his website that if the selections don't net you a profit, then your subscription will be extended for free until you do. This is a total lie as I was never extended and never heard from them again after they took my money. All I get from them is some Junk e-mail containing links to off shore sports books.
Anyway, the thing that really made me write this, is that Ferringo released this Blog on his webpage to discuss any supposed issue a client may have. I posted twice to it and created so much havoc that he deleted my comments and called me everything but a liar. The people that did catch my comments also were posting that they were expressing the same level of dissatisfaction because he was losing with College Basketball. As of this writing, I saw a post from him that he was filtering all posts to his blog, before they were published. When I tried to post, I found that he has blocked my IP address as well as many others. As a result, there have been no comments posted on his blog in 2 days, because presumably he is trying to block all the negative coming his way.
I caution anyone considering using a "professional" handicapping service to research your choice thoroughly. Do not subscribe to anyone that:
Does not publish their record by sport (Including $ won/Lost) through an independent source. This guy does not. It took hime 3 months for him to put up his own numbers for October and November which were exteremely distorted.
Do not use anyone that links to on line sports books. This is an obvious conflict of interest and should be an instant red flag.
Do not bet multiple "Units" on any one play. Especially beware of "Game of the Week", Game of the Month", or Game of the Year" picks. They are just one game of many. If you lose, you will need at least 1 more win to make it up and believe me you never will. This guy was an expert at multiple unit losses. (See on line sports book links above)
Bottom line, In my opinion, these guys are not the legitimate "experts" they tout themselves to be. They are only fellow gamblers that need someone elses money to keep playing. They get that money from suckers like you and me along with kick backs from the off shore books for their advertising. Buyer Beware!
Note: If you look hard enough, you will find that there are a few (Very few) reputable handicappers out there that shoot straight, publish their records,
and give out great advice. you will need to search through more than a couple of web pages to find them though as the hucksters (like Doc's) have overloaded the search engines.

I don't have much experience at this. But i got an email for a free weeks worth of picks from 2 handicappers of my choice on the site.. I bet on Their 7 unit bets and their 5 unit bets.. I won them all. The only one I lost was the 3 unit bet for my favorite team, so i decided to put a small wager on them.! I know it was only one week, but hell.. It had me considering buying a package! My question to your report.. If you bought ONE package, and LOST. Why didn't you persue their guarantee then? Instead you go and buy a SECOND package? There's just so many holes in your story. I just don't understand why you would make this stuff up? I just want to say. My one week was very good there!

Also, you say that a person betting $1,000 on all picks since the Fall of 2006 would have banded between $200,000 and $300,000. Why wouldn't you know exactly how much they would have banked?

You say "you have not yet figured out a way to monitor each customer's results." Have you ever tried doing just that
with a computer? It doesn't seem to me to be beyond a computer's capabilities.

Robert Ferringo's service is a scam.

I have lost for 3 months straight. Robert Ferringo used to be good but, he is past his prime. He's not worth it. Do not spend your money on his picks! absolutely worthless. You should have an extra 15,000 laying around and you might bank 1k at the end of the season. It's not worth it. He is really bad.

Sorry, Just to add that anytime I have lost with any of the cappers, all you have to do is send them an email(which they ask you to do) and ask them to keep you updated with the cappers picks until a profit is shown.................No questions asked.

Docs has been good to me.............?

Scott in vegas, Docs Sports,
Just a quick note here.
I have purchased picks from docs and they have been up and down, some GREAT some HORRIBLE. Scott, I just think that you had bad timing and were not in it for the long haul, with R Ferringo's baseball picks I'm currently up 90 units already just from the start of the season(about 8 weeks).....granted that 90 units was 120 units just a week ago. Any bets you make are a GAMBLE on the cappers thoughts and we can't all be right all of the time.......give me a break. Which gets me to my point....These guys go on heaters of winning runs and losses as well, bottom line is i'm doing alot better with them than I ever did without them. BTW - Docs Nba bought me a motorcycle this year (so far) as well :)
One thing that I will agree with scott on is that a few times per week RF's totals lines are not what you will get by the time he posts them to his subscribers. An over under of 9 will be 9 1/2 or on a couple of occasions 10by the time I can place my bet, I think he should state or say hey play this pick up to 9 at this amount of units or drop to this amount of units @ 9 1/2......

Full Rebuttal To False Accusations and Misrepresentations Claimed Against Robert Ferringo and Doc's Sports Services
AUTHOR: Doc's Sports Service - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, March 01, 2008
From Doc's Sports Services
First, we would say that Doc's Sports Service is one of the most trusted and well-respected organizations in the entire handicapping industry. Doc Moseman has been a successful professional sports handicapper for 37 years and in that time has developed an impeccable and unquestioned reputation. I assure you that everyone in our company is held to the same high standards in regards to honesty, integrity, and results. Our reputation is critical to us and we want to make sure that the negative experience of one customer doesn't distort what we've built over these decades.
Over the nearly 40 years that Doc's Sports has been distributing picks there have been thousands of satisfied customers who were able to turn a healthy profit while being treated fairly and honestly by our organization. However, there have also been customers who may not have had a positive experience, which primarily has more to do with how much money they've won or lost as opposed to whether or not we've treated them fairly or not.
While we can't always control the wins and losses, the main issue we have is in regards to questions about our "legitimacy" or our customer service. We are often praised for how we go above and beyond when it comes to our level of service and we will continue to operate in this manner.
Doc's Sports has been in business since 1971 and we have earned a great reputation in this industry. Doc, himself, is often invited to such contests as the Leroy's Money Talks Invitational. He placed second in that competition two straight years, and you don't get invited to such prestigious events without being one of the most well respected and top-producing handicappers in the industry.
Robert Ferringo has been a professional handicapper with Doc's Sports Services for nearly two years and we're extremely proud to have him with our organization. Robert has always met or exceeded the standards we have here in terms of ethics, honesty, and performance. We feel that he has a very bright future and are excited about what he has accomplished and what he will accomplish in the future.
In the seven-month time period that "Scott In Vegas" tracked, Robert posted total gross losses of approximately $3,800 for clients in basketball, baseball and football. However, in the 12 months prior to August of 2007 he posted profits of approximately $12,000 for those same clients. He has produced tremendous amounts of profits for most of his clients, but unfortunately losing stretches do happen and we are confident that he will bounce back from his recent cold spell and continue to produce.
Nothing is guaranteed in the world of sports gambling. We adopt a long-term approach to this realm of entertainment and investment and we encourage our clients to do the same. Short-term investing in sports gambling is not different than short-term investing in the stock market the chances are that you're going to either do very, very well or do very, very poorly. It's generally all or nothing, and that doesn't fit into our model of success. In fact, it's been the honest, straightforward manner in which Doc's Sports has weathered the down times that has helped us build the sterling reputation that we present.
We also encourage those people who cannot afford to lose money to not bet. We have a talented group of handicappers that can help players stay in the game as long as possible AND turn a healthy profit. However, to be able to do that you need to be able to weather the good times and the bad and have a long-term goal for success.
Since the fall of 2006 the combined selections for Robert Ferringo and Doc's Sports for college basketball, Major League Baseball, and football would have net someone betting $100 per Unit a total profit of anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000. Dime bettors those betting $1,000 per Unit would have banked between $200,000 and $300,000. Full documentation is available to substantiate those claims. During that time either handicapper has had runs of tremendous fortune as well as tremendous misfortune. But the end results are undeniable. Again, this is a volatile market that we choose to make a living in. However, we do so with great success. And we do so with the highest ethical standards in the industry.
Our clients come first. And as we can't always control what happens on the field we always make sure to treat all of our customers with honesty, respect, and candor.
Here are a list of misrepresentations and distortions that we took exception to in "Scott in Vegas's" article:
1) In his article he claims to have lost $493.00 using "round numbers" while betting Robert Ferringo's baseball selections from August through October of 2007. We keep detailed records of our results and over this period someone betting $100 per Unit would have turned a profit of $1,015. After the expense of paying for the selections that's still a net profit of $595. Scott In Vegas appeared to only be betting $10 per Unit so his total profit should have been $59.50.
2) Scott in Vegas claims that we don't flat bet, which means to bet the same amount of money on each game. This is true, but an overwhelming majority of handicapping services has some sort of rating system so this is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. We use the system because it has been proven to work over the years. If Doc knew of a better system he would be using it.
In fact, many services use tiered packages with different pricing. For example, they may have a Silver Package of selections for $100, a Gold Package for $500, and a Platinum Package for $1000. We do not do that. We offer the same price for all of our handicappers' selections. Each client pays the same amount for the same picks.
3) He claims that over the period that he tracked in baseball and in football that Robert Ferringo's plays rated 4.0 or higher (The $40 bet) would "more often than not lose". This is not true. Over that time his record on plays rated 4.0 or higher was 54-47, including 24-11 in baseball and 30-36 in football.
4) Scott claims that, "Ferringo distorts his numbers." However, he doesn't provide any examples and this statement can be considered libel. Everything that is posted anywhere on our site, at all times, is 100 percent accurate to the best of our knowledge. Mistakes obviously happen, but they are corrected in the swiftest possible fashion.
5) The policy of Doc's Sports Services is that we extend the service of customers who do not show a profit over the course of their subscription for any given season. We have always honored this policy and any claim that we haven't is baseless.
Here is the official statement from the company. This goes out on several emails and is posted in our member area.
Please keep in mind we have so many customer subscriptions, starting and stopping on different days, with different handicappers, for different sports, that it would be impossible for us to monitor each customer's individual performance. We leave it up to you to let us know when picks are owed to you, and we will always deliver on our guarantee to you. Customer service is very important here at Doc's Sports. We have not yet figured an automatic way to monitor each customer's results based on sign up time, units, capper and sports, but when we owe you something you can be assured you will get it, all you have to do is ask.
6) We did not ban anyone's IP address from accessing Doc's Sports Blog. The Blog was set up as a tool for our customers to ask questions and get insight into how their handicappers go about making their selections. It was not intended to be a forum for people to rant, and our move was also an attempt to keep competitors from coming in and posting their promotions. (Which was happening.) There are many other venues for those things and the intended purpose of our Blog was simply to help our clients in any way possible.
The fact is that "Scott from Vegas" or any of our other clients can always call up and ask for and extension of service. Not only will we oblige, but also in many cases we will give them extra service or extra games. It's always been our policy to go above and beyond. It should also be noted that we've attempted to contact "Scott in Vegas" but we only have one Scott with a Las Vegas address and he did not subscribe to Robert's college basketball selections. If contact is made we will certainly be happy to take care of any of the questions, concerns, or issues you may have. We can be reached at 1-866-238-6696 or service@docsports.com.
