While in the bidding process for a new custom pool I paid $3,000.00 to Dan Essig and his company - Essig Pools for a pool rendition and consultation with Michelle for my pool which is worth approximately $170,000 or more. Please keep in mind the fact that almost all pool companies will do this design & consultation work for free just to get the opportunity of getting a job like this. I agreed to this payment but I later found out and since I've never built a pool before only structures, that Dan Essig and his sales rep. Michelle knew that my entire property was connected and being operating by gas. They advised me and I quote "I would never recommend or insist to a client a gas pool heater, they are horrible" This statement came directly from the owner Dan Essig and all while he showed me some electric heaters he already had in his warehouse inventory. I recently found out a few days ago that this was 1,000% not a true statement!  Not only the equipment cost less but the efficiency is much better with gas and most all pool owners would opt to use gas heaters over electric heaters if they only had the chance not only due to costs of equipment but the fact it heats the pool at a fraction of the time it would take to heat any pool of any size. Dan stated this falsely due to the fact that he showed me he had in stock several electric pool heaters so I figured he was not thinking about the client he was thinking about his current inventory and how to reduce it. This really upset me!!! I prayed and thought about this long and hard before posting this and I came to the conclusion that consumers should really be warned when a company like Essig Pools acts in an unethical and dishonest manner such as this!!!  I have no other reason or really the time to make this post but I am only doing so in the hope to warn consumers to not be blind to unethical business practices. My only advice to you is to be very cautious and beware when doing any job with Essig Pools. Also, Dan did his best to bad mouth the competition constantly and I mean Dan literally bad mouth everything that the competition had to offer and that really turned me off to Essig Pools because that is also a very unethical business practice.

#1 REBUTTAL Owner of company

Response to Mr. Cabo

AUTHOR: Dan - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Dear Mr. Cabo,

As you know, I called you right after reading your statement about Michele, my company and myself.
Originally, you wrote us a nice note thanking Michele and me on May 5th, explaining that you were hiring another contractor. I appreciated that note. Nothing has changed with me, my company or Michele in the last 6 weeks since you wrote that note.

We didn't do a "simple rendition". Initially, Michele met with you at your home to get the feel of what you were looking for and the layout of where everything was going to be located. Michele designed and drew the pool for your house. We added it to your house plan, then your future additions because rightly so, you wanted to see how the pool would look from your future outdoor kitchen area, your future pergola, and your father's future house addition. After meeting with Michele, she showed you a 3D rendition of the proposed project. You then wanted to have it printed and specifications so you could evaluate it and take the design to other companies to bid. We explained that we could print our design for you to bid and evaluate under a consultation agreement. You then ended up getting all the specifications and met with Michele and my rock designer / installer for several hours. Additionally, you had had 4 meetings with us. When a perspective client wants this information over and above an estimate, we offer a consultation agreement. This allows you to take our design, in your case specifications and the rock information to other potential companies for bidding. If you use our company, that work and the charge is 100% credited to the job already quoted. You received all the 3D print outs and the specifications. You paid for our designing and then sent a thank you note. I would assume you were ok and I was not a bad guy at that point or you would not have sent a thank you note after you decided to have another builder build the pool. I thanked you for the oppurtunity and I thought that was it.

It seems that I became a bad guy when you decided that heat pumps are not efficient and that I wanted you to buy a heat pump for the wrong reasons. You are incorrect on both fronts. Every heat pump in our warehouse is assigned to someone that has already purchased a heater. I don't buy equipment unless it is purchased. We do not have a retail store.

When you were comparing heaters, you told me that the best heat pump was from Hayward, so I will use their website for the first comparison. It shows the rough cost to heat your future 780 sq ft pool with LP delivered at 2.75 a gallon to be $18,512.59 a year. To heat the pool and spa with their heat pump, their report shows $2,277.05 a year. Another company, AquaCal that customizes the report more regionally, shows the comparison of operating the gas heater at $11,752.68 for gas and $1,672.50 for their heat pump for 1 year. The savings percentages are about the same (87.7% and 85.77% respectively), but the dollar totals are different. I believe the total dollars saved are different due to Hayward's not being as regionally specific. It cost more to keep a pool heated when it's colder. The numbers are based on the rough size of the pool that you were purchasing and the cost of electric from FPL and the cost of propane gas from a local provider; Using the more conservative numbers; over (10) years, the cost to use your pool and spa year round with a the heat pump we suggested would save you about $100,801.80. That is why we recommend heat pumps in our market. Maybe you are comparing electric resistance heaters to gas heaters, instead of electric heat pumps to gas heaters.

Your pool company called me and explained that the heat pump doesn't work when it is in the 40's outside and that it takes longer to heat the pool or spa with a heat pump. He is correct. The Hayward heat pump doesn't, the AquaCal does heat in the 40's, but for sure the colder it is, the harder it is to produce heat. We typically design heating needs for our S. FL typical winter temperatures, not 40°. Fortunately, in S FL there are not many days in the 40's and most people do not swim when it is 40 degrees. I reminded you and you remembered that I explained if you only came to town rarely or wanted to heat very quickly then I would say a gas heater would be ok. BTW, I never said that a gas heater "was horrible and unreliable". Needless to say, we designed your pool with a controller to allow you to easily heat your pool/spa in advance. I did what I would do for myself and I believe what most knowledgeable consumers would want.

Additionally, you called us multiple times with many questions about products that you were being offered by other companies and asked our opinions, i.e. ionizers. I explained why we didn't sell some of the things that you were asking about with facts and experience. I didn't think it was in your best interest for me or someone else to put certain products on your pool. We make business by selling, not selling doesn't produce work, but if I don't like the ionizer you want, I should not promote you buying it from me even though I make money from it. I explained the difference between Hayward heat pumps and the Aqua Cal heat pumps. When I explain the benefits of of one product over another you don't have to agree, but I believe when you ask, I should be informed and explain what I truly believe.

If I had told you to buy a gas heater, and did not inform you of the extra cost, then I would understand your nasty criticism for me not caring to explain what I believe as correct. I suggested a heat pump to you because I believe that was what made best sense after our discussions. Feel free to educate yourself and then purchase what you would like, but before you call someone unethical or dishonest you should be sure of what you state as "1000%" fact.

The links below will take you to the programs that show the cost to heat your pool;

Sincerely, Dan Essig
