Jean,
The SOL in FL on credit card debt is 5 years, therefore the debt is still legally collectable.
Did the lawyer file a lawsuit, or just send a letter or call?
If the lawyer filed a lawsuit you should get a lawyer right away.
If a lawsuit has not been filed, you should do as J suggests and request validation.
Do this by certified mail, return reciept requested, and be sure to put the certified # on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records. This is very important as it proves what you sent.
In this letter request a copy of the original signed contract, as well as a full account history and itemization of charges. Also demand proof that they own the debt as well as proof of payment, indicating amount paid.
All collections activity must cease until they provide the requested information.
