I would like to report a local business that is scamming people into buying new heaters.  My mom had a "tech" come out to repair her heater and at a glance he determined that she needed a brand new unit that would cost 6K.  That was the only option he gave her.  He charged her $100 for the service visit but he didn't come in a service truck.  He came in a pimped out truck.  He wasnt there to fix anything.  He was there to sell a new heater.  She had another repairman come out the next day and he fixed it for $150.  Apparently she just needed a part replaced. These people should be put out of business.  Total disgrace

My mother is elderly and doesn't have a lot of money.  This guy asked her what her electric bill was.  She said $130 a month.  She lives in a 3 bedroom house so that is a normal bill.  He said "oh wow that's a lot.  My house is 3x this big and my electric bill is lower then that"  REALLY???  He was trying to hard sell her a 6K brand new heating unit that she didn't need.  I called them yesterday and asked to speak to a manager.  The receptionist took the message but no one returned my call.  The tech that came out was a guy named Rob.

Due to my mothers age she is on a fixed income.  Hard selling her on a 6K brand new unit should not have been the priority. A clear example of this hard sale is telling her that $130 electric bill for a 3 bedroom house is expensive, and that his house in Yardley that is 3x the size of hers was much lower. If The tech was truely worried about her wellbeing he would have shown up in a work truck with tools and parts ready to make a repair not a sale.  Especially since she was charged $100 for a "service" call.  He told her if they did fix the exsisting unit it would be very expensive.  Clearly that was not true being that she had it repaired for $150 the next day.  Your Yelp reviews solitify my claim.  Nice try though.

Our Technician's Finding

We wish you could have been on site with your mother to discuss the decision and reasoning for our technician's analysis and suggestion.  All of our company trucks our marked with our company name and logo.  Due to the age and condition of the 18-year-old heat pump system, our technician thoroughly explained to your mother that for safety and continued heating and air conditioning operation, it was our suggestion to replace the system.  Heat pump systems do not last forever and due to her age, we felt it was more critical to replace the system that was at the end of its useful life.  This comes from our 27 years of combined technical experienced and historical data.

The NAHB identifies the average lifespan of a heat pump as 16 years.  Here is a quote directly from them, as they are a highly respected organization:

"Furnaces on average last 15-20 years, heat pumps 16 years, and air conditioning units 10-15 years. Tankless water heaters last more than 20 years, while an electric or gas water heater has a life expectancy of about 10 years."

We do not feel comfortable taking your mother's money for a repair that we cannot warranty and that we feel is a short-term solution and not in her best interest.
