I am a current assistant manager with a family dollar store so I can't include too much info. Believe me, if I could work somewhere else I would. Which is sad because I have almost 16 years experience with this company. I have even been a manager before. However, the way things are done at this company is unreal.
First there is the payroll issue. They expect you to be able to get a ton of things done in one day even though you are there by yourself till 12 some days, have to give your cashier an hour break and have to stop and straighten at 4. That only gives you maybe 3 or so hours of actual work time. And they expect ppl to support their families on 30 hours a week if you are an asst.. and maybe, if you are lucky, 15 a week if you are a cashier. Starting pay for a cashier where I am is only 5.85. You can't support a family on that. The only ppl that can work for that is teenagers and we can't hire them if they are under 18. They give you these hours and then tell you also that it is against policy to have another job.
As assistants they try and give you 35 hrs a week, but then if you are lucky enough to get a pay raise they cut your hours down to 30. Secondly, there is the company policies issue. Which is a big one. Write ups in this company are a joke. NO one is threatened by them because you get one, you sign it, it then just goes in your folder and no where else. Policies are broken in my store every day and nothing is done about it even though complaints are made to the DM almost on a daily basis.
There are so many things, I could go on and on. I have been left in the store with no employees all day and no one cared. They expect you to work like dogs and they treat you like crap. If you are below a DM, they could care less about you. They have no respect for you at all. I am a very hard worker, matter of fact, I am depended on in my store to get most of the work done even though I am only an assistant.
This company needs to start thinking about the people that are in the stores every day , making the money for them and start showing them respect.

I am a cashier, recovery person, stock person, and I do schematics for the store I work at in Maywood IL.(city outside of chicago). Working for this company has became a mess in which you do all this work with little pay. They expect you to get a lot of work done with only a few hours, we only work up to 5 hrs. a day no one gets a full eight hours, the a*s.Manger does't even get 40...The manager talks to his workers any kind of way now I don't know if this rule is at da store you work for but in the morning when you count up your till you should have a certain ammount and mines didn't so curious I asked why was it short because they don't want you taking in a short till and mines was short over $20 the manager yelled at me for wanted to see why the till was short in which he just sent me home altogether. This past weekend I informed the manager that I was going to attend a funeral and someone was going to wok in my place, well the day of the services he called and said he didn't want hat person working for me because she would hit over 30hrs for the week so he wanted me to come in, but I couldn't so I got to work yesterday 9/1/08 and I see that my hours have been cut from a little over 25 all the way down to a little past 14 and when I asked him why his response was you seem to busy this quarter...Then he talks about me to other workers and shoppers which isn't right...He is also very racist he says, "anyone who votes for Obama is an idiot" first he shouldn't be talking about politics in the job and if he does when he sees it's becoming a problem he should shutup, and second he shouldn't down people on who they vote for....This man is the worse manager I have worked for and I worked for 5 managers in the time I have been working for the company instead of things getting better this company is getting worse and I wish that all workers from across the land and do something about this unfair company....

Oh, and when I say I have alot of time invested, I have been with this company for 16 years. Just so ya know, with the exception of the payroll issue, FD is not the problem. You hear these complaints with other retail stores as well. Our problem is a bad manager and a bad DM. Oh, and we are not a generic little dollar store either. I know it may sound like I am being defensive, but it really irks me when ppl make comments about things they know nothing about.

First of all, to the rude comment about what we sell. You must not have been in a FD in a while as we have some very nice products. Besides that, there is more to know about the job than just what we sell. I would greatly appreciate it if you have never worked for the company, not to make rude comments about me or why I chose to stay there. To the ex manager, it would seem that it is mostly the managers that are in the stores 70 or more hours doing the work however that is not the case here. We received a 600 piece truck today and thanks to me, it is all out. I work very hard at my job, know it well, and enjoy it very much. The problem I have is my manager not doing her share of the work and the DM doing nothing about it.

I will 100% agree with you about everything except that managers dont follow the rules. I was a store manager for family dollar with top sales in my area week after week, But family dollar doesnt care, I never had enought budget to even attempt to get what they wanted done, So guess what I worked 80 to 100 hours every week, with no extra pay.
I know lots of managers will just let things go and have there off time but I cant stand to be behind. So most of what the op says if 100% true and thats why I walked away. I got fed up and called my dist manager and told her to come and count my money and gave her my keys Ive never looked back.
I love management as I was in managment for 30 Years but when I went with this company i found out it was a joke. As otheres have said if you can afford it just walk away because family dollar aint going to change LOL

"Only reason I can come up with is that I have alot of time invested and it is hard to find another job around here that I know so well."
What's to know? You sell Chinese-made crap, produced by near slave labor, for a dollar? How long did it take you to learn that job?
You may be right - you may be destined to stay there. Enjoy.

You have me thinking. I have no idea why I am still employed with this company. Only reason I can come up with is that I have alot of time invested and it is hard to find another job around here that I know so well.
I know all companies have there problems and are difficult to work for. There are issues going on in my store that could be resolved...they just have't been. The policies that are in place are for the whole crew..not just the manager. The manager however is the only one not following them. I know pay is bad wherever you work as ppl always think they are worth more, however that is not my main complaint. You should never work somewhere like we do and be alone till 12. And then be yelled at because things aren't done. Thank you for your comment though. As I said, it does have me thinking. If I can't come up with ONE good reason why I am still there, than why am I?

A Dozen Good Reasons

Ok, you've given us a dozen good resons why you should give two weeks notice and leave this company. Now, give us one good reson why you should stay. I hate to tell you but most companies suck to work for. There was a good article in last sunday's paper about a guy who was a chef at a place who got "promoted" to head chef. The only problem was that once he got "promoted" to head chef, he becauce salaried v getting paid by the hour. As it stands, he'll make about $20,000 a year LESS, working the same hours, because he's not getting paid by the hour, for the overtime. Ploicies are for the direction of management only. That's why their called ploicies and not rules/regulations. Get some education and dump the crappy job. In some cases, it's better to have two hourly part time jobs then it is to have one salaried management position.
