I paid a settlement amount years ago and they never sent me a letter confirming the payment. It is now time for me purchase a house and the lenders are requesting a letter showing the debt was paid because the account to fcnb is showing on my credit as a charge off. I need the letter asap and dont have the time to mail them a letter and wait for them to respond whenever they feel like it. I have tried to look for contact numbers but there are none to be found. I thought all businessess had a customer service number you could call. I dont know what to do. If the lenders need a letter how can I get one if I cant talk to a human being at fcnb master trust?

I paid the settlement 4 years ago before it became a charge off. I paid this to a collection agency. It just recently became a charge off because they said I still owed them. I dont have the same bank that I had for years ago and the company never sent me letter confirming it was paid.

First of all, I was in the mortgage business for several years, so I have seen this many times. You say the charge off was "years ago" that you made the settlement on.. HOW MANY YEARS, Exactly? This is very important.

Most lenders will not look at anything past 3 years as long as you have had NOTHING negative in those 3 years. You can get an underwriter exception on this very easily. Just swear out a statement that it was paid and provide proof of your payment you claim to have made.

You might need to find a different lender if they are unwilling to do this.

Also, you never stated WHO you actually made the settlement payment to. Was it actually FCNB or was it a third party debt collector or junk debt buyer? This is also very important. Who was the payee on the payment you made?

Once something is charged off, there is really no benefit to you to pay it. The payment will not improve your credit or remove the charge off entry. It will just show as a paid collection, which is still negative for scoring purposes. If you would have left it alone, the 7 years from date of first major delinquency would have elapsed and it would have been removed from your credit files automatically.
