Painters (P) were authorized to be in my house March 9-12. March 9, the garage door was functional but disabled as painters were using the garage as a spray booth. March 10, an installer representing Floor Craft (FC), went into the home, unauthorized, to complete work scheduled to occur the previous week.

P gave this account of March 10: FC had been using the garage door to move floor debris out to his vehicle parked in the driveway. He returned to the house from a dump run around 2:30pm. He attempted to open the garage door when it mechanically failed; one of the paint crew witnessed the flooring contractor leaving a sign saying garage door broken, do not use. When P arrived May 11 to a garage door still in disrepair, he called me to report it. I had already spoken with FC on March 11, about the disruption to the painting that had occurred the previous day. At that time, FC said nothing about damage to the garage door at the time.

When I called the FC March 12 to inquire about the garage door, FC denied their installer knew anything about the failure of the door. I urged FC to follow up with installer and with sales (who called me to inquire about the door's functionality March 10 ~ 2:45pm). FC agreed to speak with them, and said he would call me back. He never called.

Overhead Door (OD) to come out to repair the door on March 12. According to the field technician's report, someone had hit door, then someone tried fixing it by using a hammer on new tracks, made problem worse, not a warranty call. While OD made the door operational again, the door is puckered about van bumper-high on the left side and the integrity of some moving and stationary parts of the door are compromised. OD recommended purchasing a new door.

I called FC March 18 requesting a face-to-face meeting. On March 20, we met at the house to finish our business. Earlier in the week, installer left a sign regarding floor, which matched the handwriting from the garage sign: do not use, garage door broken.

When I showed the signs to FC, he admitted that his installer did have knowledge of the door failure. Installer claims to have attempted to use the garage door and it just failed. First, this is obviously a different story from than what I was told the previous week. I am left questioning the honesty and integrity of FC. Second, I am troubled that installer did not immediately report the issue to his manager or me (the owner), or contact the OD emergency service hotline. Instead, he left the house that afternoon knowing the garage door was in disrepair, and the house vulnerable to intruders (the garage door was gaping open 4-6 inches on one side). This action was irresponsible.

According to P and two neighbors who were home March10, the installer's vehicle was the only one in the driveway. It was backed diagonally in the driveway. P's crew were allegedly parked in the street, FC unwilling to consider that installer was the most likely one to have accidentally backed into the garage door.

FC is denying all responsibility for the strike to the garage door that eventually led to its mechanical failure. And, Floor Craft has no response for why they did nothing to notify me of the garage door failure that occurred on their watch. They maintain they have only honest and credible contractors, but their admission to me on March 20 indicates otherwise. I am seeking restitution in the amount of $1241.80 for the cost of replacing the garage door ($951.80), custom painting, ($195) and repairing the existing door so that it is functional ($95).

POSTED: Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Floor Craft recently contacted me, requesting that I have the complaint removed. Since the complaint was handled by the store owner and settled to my satisfaction in April 2009, I honored their request by emailing RipOffReports.com and requesting the removal of the original file and all updates on Oct 21, 2009.  I am awaiting confirmation that this action will be taken.

Company made good

It took several weeks to resolve the complaint and only after the company owner got involved, but FloorCraft did provide compensation for my garage door. In addition, the owner involved me in reviewing the entire job, challenges, and troubleshooting so that the company could "learn" from this experience.  I appreciate Mark Strauch's policies to approaching customer service.
