Fonner Hearing Aid Center repair my hearing aid without authorization. They fixed before telling me how much it would cost, and now they will not give it back.

In regards to complaint #61090
A little history..
Chandra has a moderate-to-severe sensori-neural hearing loss. She wears completely in-the canal style hearing aids in both ears. I have taken care of her hearing aids since she came to me in November 2000. I have spent many visits with Chandra helping her to learn how to take care of her hearing aids, cleaning, adjusting and servicing them without charge. In June of 2001 we fit her with her new hearing aids through her insurance. Her insurance refused to pay for the second hearing aid and Chandra did not help me collect for the second hearing aid which she did keep. As a result I had a large write-off on her account which she fails to mention in the complaint.

Chandra had been in my office for service, repair or adjustment at least 12 times since the fitting in June 01. She has never been charged for in-office repairs that typically would be a minimum charge of $145.00. On top of this we loaned Chandra (without charge) a hearing aid on many occasions so she would not be without some kind of hearing device when her own hearing aid was off for repair.

Addressing the complaint.
The repair that Chandra has complained about was beyond the capabilities of my office staff to repair it in-house. It would have to be sent off to the factory for repair. At this point I estimated the repair cost for Chandra to be in the neighborhood of $300.00. She told me that she had called around and got estimates of $145.00 from other dispensers. I explained to Chandra that there was no way anyone could do it for that price as the shell was damaged beyond repair, and if they actually saw the hearing aid damage their quote would be comparable. Chandra chose to have the repair done through this office at our estimate, and once again I loaned her a hearing aid so she would not be without during the repair.

We sent the hearing aid to the manufacturer. When the aid arrived back here I was surprised as she was by their charges. My office staff called her when it arrived from the factory and she was told the revised cost was to be $650.00. Of course she was stunned and I believe it is at this point that communication started to break down.

When she and I talked for the first time after the hearing aid was repaired, I offered the repair at cost. Her response was OK , but I was uncertain if that was an agreement to the new price or a conversation closer.

With no further communication she showed up at the office to pick up her repair on Friday June 13th. I was out of the office that day. My office staff would not release the hearing aid to her that day as Chandra was unwilling to pay the $350.00 (my cost). Chandra threatened legal action then left.

I tried reaching her several times by phone but was not successful. Finally, I spoke with her husband; he and I talked about it and I left Chandra a message. She obviously got that message, as she came to the office Friday, June 20th and paid $320.00, which we accepted as payment in full. The hearing aid was released to her at that time.

I believe I explained this to her husband, but I wanted to make sure she understood as well. The remake on the hearing aid she had sent in basically required enough repair that it was essentially a brand new hearing instrument replacing all the components and the shell. One final noteChandra did not return the loanerI think she came out WAY ahead on this deal.

Fonner is an exellent Dispenser

I have no idea what the previous person (Chandra) is talking about. I have been using Fonner since 1989 (4 sets of new aids) and they have been absolutely wonderful. Julie and her team will spend however long it takes to make the situation right. Case in point, I had an issue with the programming of my new instruments and we spent at least an hour making adjustments and she would not let me leave until it was right....

Fonner hearing aids scored a 10 in my book!!!
