I went to check out a Volkswagen Passat they had for sale. I get there for my appointment, take a look at the car and then decide to take it for a test drive and to a AAA certified mechanic for a vehicle inspection. We get in the car, and it won't start. Dealer says it was just moved to the front of the lot so he can't see how the battery is dead, but he charges it and as we get ready to leave again, the cars kind of jumps whenever the gear is changed, and the engine seems rather loud. He says the engine is probably just loud because the car is trying hard to charge the battery, and the jumping of the gear change is somehow related as well, but I should still take it to the mechanic to check out. (at this point, I'm rather amused and decide to continue on)

So, we get it on the road. A few blocks away from the dealership, it runs out of gas. So here I am, the buyer, helping them push it into a parking lot to get it off the road. They make a call and someone shows up with a gas canister. Said person tries to put gas in the car but has no spout, so most of the gas pours all over the side of the car and the tire (yep, really good for the paint). They now send someone to get a spout. Guy comes back, they put a little gas in the car and now guess what? The car won't start again because the battery didn't have time to charge. So, they send someone again to get a battery charger.

But wait, there's STILL more...

We take the car to a gas station, and they leave the car running so the battery doesn't die, at the gas station mind you, and the guy shoves the gas pump handle into the car, right where all that gas was recently spilled. I thought for sure we were all going to die in an explosion. (now I'm just laughing SO hard inside, and have to keep this misadventure going)

Back on the road now to the AAA mechanic. We get there, and he can hear the car from inside the shop, thought maybe it was a diesel powered Volkswagen, which it was not. Already he has no faith in the car, and then when I explain the car sort of kicks intermittently when changing gears, he doesn't even bother to check it out, tells me to walk away (which I had decided to long ago anyway, but I wanted the dealer to know the truth).

So, we drive the car back to the dealer, and the dealer, John (I think), tries to tell me the mechanic knows nothing and that his mechanic checked the car out and it was fine. Right, sure. The final nail in the coffin was, when I try to tell John the car is even louder now, he tells me all Passats are that way, which is kind of funny because about an hour earlier, he explained away the noise as the car trying to charge the battery.

So yeah, that all happened. My advice: stay the heck away from this place like your life depended on it. Walk, take a bus, Uber, whatever, it's all better than buying a car here.
