I live in Charlotte, NC. I had insurance coverage through Geico and have for 4 years now. My little Brother is moving to North Carolina to go to college and is looking into staying at my house to save money. I made a request for Geico, my insurance company, to give me a QUOTE on how much it would be for him to be on my insurance instead of his Dad's from Alaska. This way, if he registered his car in NC and got a NC license, he could claim residency in a year.

The agent that got the request did not give me a quote but instead went ahead and added my Brother to my policy without my authorization. He sent me an email stating that it is their policy to add all member of a household to my police. The email even stated:

"We received your request for a quote to add **** **** to your policy. However, your GEICO auto policy contract automatically extends coverage to all household residents/resident relatives. Therefore, we have added him to your policy as a driver. Your new six-month premium is $1,299.14. This is an increase of $859.30 per six months. The changes we made to your policy will post online within 24 hours. At that time, you will also be able to review your updated billing information."

The first problem with that is that he doesn't even live here yet. It was a quote requesting an amount IF he moved here. Now, they won't remove him from my policy without me providing them with his drivers license number, which they never had, so that they can report him to the state insurance commission for dropping insurance. He isn't even a resident of NC. I don't have his drivers license number, and its ridiculous that they think I should have to provide all this information for them to fix a mistake THEY made. Meanwhile, they have taken the additional amount out of my account.

I'm filing a lawsuit against them tomorrow and finding another company to handle my insurance needs.

The whole point that you missed was that your company made a mistake. They asked for only a quote and not anything else. Why should they have to provide proof of anything? Your company just added the brother without proof that he was indeed living there. You lost a good customer because of failure to correct the mistake without all of the hastle.

Geico is a Family Auto Insurer, meaning anyone in your household is listed on your policy. Insurance is based on risk, the higher your risk the higher you premium. The reason his license number is requested is because the only way he can be removed is to list him as a Named Driver Exclusion. Meaning that any damage caused by him would not be covered. If he's not going to be using your vehicles or living in your household then there should be no problem completing this form right. The difference in premium should be adjusted. I hope this helps...
