Gold Star Van Lines Moving Scam - Company Hijacked belongings and is now holding them ransom Fremont, California
*Consumer Comment: They can't do that.
Hired company to move household from Oregon to Wisconsin. Signed contract and non-binding estimate for approx $1250. Company called 7 days after items were picked up (I assumed that they were being shipped) saying that items had not moved and that total due for the service was $1000 more than we had paid. Movers still have not given me a shipping date and will not move items until the "new" deposit of 50% has been paid. At this point we don't trust them with another dime.

I used to work for a moving company, luckily not this one. If you signed a non binding estimate for $1250 then the only additional amount they can charge you is $125 in order to have your belongings delivered. Look at the estimate you signed. It should say that the estimate plus 10% is required in order to have shipment delivered. Any amount over that should be billed to you. If they are charging you an additonal $1000, I suspect your items weighed more than originally thought. That is not necessarily the fault of the moving company nor is it necessarily your fault. Sometimes estimators forget to inventory an entire room. Sometimes customers add additional items to the moving truck that weren't originally going to be moved. I would ask to witness the truck being weighed. You will obviously have to meet the driver at the weigh station before they deliver and afterwards. If it turns out there is less weight than the original weight (the driver should have weighed his truck before and after loading your items), then you will receive either a revised bill or a refund if you have already paid the additional amount. Keep in mind that since your items didn't deliver that the company may have put your items in storage. If that is the case, they may charge you storage fees as well.
