I recently bought a 1999 Toyota tacoma from Grand Motors in portland Oregon March 2012. I put $2,000 down on the truck, I made my first payment on time before the due date in April which is the 26th of every month. In May my 2nd payment was due on Saturday the 26th which was Memorial weekend and made plans to go up to Seattle figuring I would just make payment when I returned even though aware that it would be a few days late. On Wensday the 30th I went to class and returned home around 9pm, I came back outside around 11pm to find that my truck was missing. The next morning I contacted what I thought was the primary finacing company handling my loan to see if they had sent out repossession only to find out they had no idea what was going on. I contacted Grand Motors to see what was going on and the sales team were very unhelpful and could not contact the owner president Alex Mahyari. When I finally did talk to Alex, my first conversation was very short, he told me "Sorry buddy, your late" and hung up on me. I called several times more and when I spoke with Alex again he had told me that even a day late that he could repo my car and that I was not going to get the car back unless I pay it off in full. When I went to retrieve belongings in the truck he told me "sorry bout your luck, it's a business, all these cars parked around the tacoma are also recently repossessed" I asked him "so you make your living by taking down payments and waiting until some is a day late so you can repo the vehicle back?" He just responded, "it's just business" I proceeded shortly after to tell him what I thought of his shady business and of him and left the lot.

A friend I know who also is in the car sales business was aware of Grand Motors and told me that Grand Motors have been doing this for quite some time, taking in large down payments and then waiting until your one day late and repossessing the car with out any terms of redemption besides paying the car off and then re circulating the vehicle back into sale. Grand Motors is by far a predatory Car sales lot, and even though legal very shady, I am now $2,300 in the hole and with out vehicle to drive. I want others to beware of these kind car sales and not fall in the same position I have. Any input welcome, thanks.

Update

AUTHOR: j30 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, June 14, 2012

Just dropping an update on Grand Motors as of June 14th 2012. As of today I have not received terms of redemption from grand motors or Vehicle Acceptance. The letter that I got from Vehicle Acceptance clearly states that they are the finance company and in bold underline letters states not to make payments to Grand Motors. As of June 2nd the Tacoma was already place back on the lot with sale stickers and on the 5th was placed back on they're website and Craigslist for sale again which is breaking Oregon state law. A vehicle must not be advertised for sale or for sale with in 10 days from when the letter of redemption is sent which again I have not received. I also contacted DMV and the Tacoma has not been re registered since 2009. So to answer your question, yes now I do have proof of illegal activity and have sent letters to DMV investigation department and Attorney general. I have also been in touch with an attorney who specializes in vehicles.

Two questions

AUTHOR: coast - (USA)

"there is usually 5-10 days of grace period"

Do the terms of the written agreement provide for that?

"GRAND MOTORS NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR BUSINESS NO AND'S IF'S OR BUT'S."

That would require proof of criminal activity perpetrated by the dealer. Do you have that proof?

this about right and wrong

First off, I do care if I'm late on bills, I was working long hours and had to leave town. 2nd of all, have any of you been late on payments on rent, mortgage, car payments, ect.... ect...??? I'm sure you have and if that was taken from you with on first late payment with out any kind of reasonable remedy wouldn't you be upset???? I think you would, maybe I am phrasing terms in the incorrect way but point is that Grand Motors is doing shady business, and what they are doing is praying upon people with bad credit such as myself, taking fairly large down payments, repossessing the vehicle as soon as they feel they are legal too and re selling the car to some other poor sap. For the most part I knew better to buy from a car lot of this kind but was in the need for a truck or suv for my nature of work and bought to hastily. I don't care what any one else thinks, these guys at Grand Motors are scum of the earth. They dam well what they are doing and I also left some details about they're deceiving so called finance company that was supposed to the sole lean holder unknown to me Alex was still a lean holder and in control of when to call for repo other wise normally yes there is usually 5-10 days of grace period. GRAND MOTORS NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR BUSINESS NO AND'S IF'S OR BUT'S.

It may not be what you would call a scam.

But it's pretty d**n low.Repo even if it's a day late, just goes to show he makes more money selling his clunkers than having people pay them off.Any time I have ever financed anything they have always given 5 to 10 days grace period. You can't get any lower than this.

No one said it was OK

The comment is that it's not a ripoff because it's within the contract.  You even knew you would be late and didn't care.  You could have made the payment before you left.

Why would you think it's OK to be few days late.  That's fuzzy thinking.

Grand Motors

Ok, let me rephrase my title. Grand Motors Predatory car sales, I have yet to hear of any car dealer that orders out a repo on 2nd month of payments and only 3-4 days late. And gives no terms of redemption other than pay off and keeps the down payment. I can see if some one is constantly delinquent on payments and does not communicate. But in my case and I'm sure many others, this is hands down shady business and if any one thinks it is ok you have a serious issue with your logic.

"grand motors Alex Mahyari Car financing scammers"

You defaulted on the loan. It is not a scam because the lender did not violate the terms of the agreement.
