I took used books in to sell.I had older books, magazines, and books I had only read once. There were eight boxes in all. They offered me fifty cents total for all of the books. It was my understanding that they paid forty percent of what they could sell the books for. I know several books were worth at least one dollar each.

I feel angry because I took the time to email first and ask what there policy was for buying used books and magazines. I feel the clerks were just too lazy to go through the boxes.

I THOUGHT THAT THEY ONLY PULLED THAT RIP OFF ON CUSTOMERS IN AUSTIN,TEXAS

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 04, 2009

THEY DID THE SAME THING TO ME WHEN I HAD SIGNED FIRST EDITIONS OF BOOKS BY FAMOUS PSYCHIATRISTS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS THAT ONE OF MY RELATIVES HAD COLLECTED BUT HAD DIED AND LEFT THEM TO ME.

ME AND MY ROOMMATE TOOK THEM IN THE STORE AT THE SOUTH LAMAR HALF PRICE BOOK STORE IN AUSTIN AND THEY MADE US THE SAME OFFER AS YOU. WE TOOK OUR BOOKS AND WE LEFT!

I WOULD HAVE SPIT ON THAT INSULTING,SMIRKING, SNEERING ( EXPLETIVE DELETED)PERSON WHO THOUGHT THAT HE WAS GOING TO SCAM US EXCEPT HE WASN'T WORTH IT. TO THIS DAY, I HAVE NEVER BEEN BACK AND WILL NEVER GO BACK! THE TOXIC ATMOSPHERE IN THERE IS JUST NOT WORTH IT.

I WANTED OTHER PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO BE INSULTED, DISRESPECTED AND LAUGHED AT TO HAVE THE SAME EXPERIENCE I DID THERE.

SOUNDS LIKE TO ME THE ( EXPLETIVES DELETED) AT YOUR STORE GOT THEIR TRAINING FROM THE PINCHE RIP OFF GUY IN AUSTIN,TEXAS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE, FAIR AND HONEST DEALINGS AND RESPECT.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THEM AGAIN.

WITH ANY LUCK THEY WILL GO OUT OF BUSINESS IN THESE DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIMES ESPECIALLY IF THEY TREAT CUSTOMERS LIKE ****!

It doesn't matter if it's one small sack or 20 huge boxes. What matters are the content. Our policy states that supply (how many copies do we have, is it salable...) and demand (is it a bestseller? is it on a reading list? will it cater to our demographic...) are a huge contributor to our offers.

If you are unhappy with your offer. Ask for an explanation. Our goal isn't to upset you but to provide gently used merchandise at a fair price.

Also be aware that yes, Half Price Books is a corporation. IT IS A BUSINESS. But unlike most (small corporate) businesses. We have several national and local donation programs. We offer a discount for teachers and librarians. We strongly commit ourselves to reusing, recycling, and reducing our impact on our environment. We strive to be progressive, continue providing a service and maintain in our current economy. I strongly suggest customers who are confused or angry about their offers - ask for an explanation or just say no. We want you to leave happy, come back and continue to enjoy reading, listening, or watching secondhand. Perhaps you will never be fully satisfied with your offers. That's okay. We understand. If you take out the "middle man" you may make more money. But as stated. We are business. We are here to provide a service. If you have further questions, call corporate. They may be able to provide you with more answers or appease your frustrations.

Half-Price Books RIPPED me off too...

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 30, 2008

At last you weren't asked to "DONATE" your items to them like I found out I had just done AFTER I unloaded everything...

Notice it is always AFTER you have unloaded everything and they have it all sorted and it would be next to impossible to get it back, once they have it all broken down and sorted.

Whoever trained your people there must have trained the crew up here in Austin,TX.

If you don't like what they do, then DON'T SHOP THERE.

I have been a loyal customer every since they first opened their doors in Dallas, TX and that location that used to be the laundromat was located across from the old Doctor Pepper bottling company then they moved to what used to be a Captain's Cargo import store and now.... who knows.

They would NEVER have insulted anybody back then the way they do now.

I GUESS THE YUPPIE GREED/HATRED/ARROGANCE FACTOR MADE A HOSTILE TAKEOVER....

SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THEM!

I feel betrayed, stupid and ANGRY!

So I won'tbuy anything there again ever.

Like a fair-weather friend who kicks you in the face with a steel toed boot when you are momentarily down after you helped them get back on your feet...

I BELIEVE YOUR STORY SINCE IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME TWICE IN AUSTIN AND IT HAS HAPPENED TO OTHERS AS WELL. In times of prosperity, people just blew it off because they didn't need the money... But now...

If they keep treating people like this, they better be prepared to go out of business. I guess that is the real reason they put in the surveillance cameras and that would be to use as evidence in case any outraged patron who was offered pennies on the dollar OR NOTHING AT ALL --because they thought you were a hyped up streeter stealing peoples' books to resell --will get what they deserve and that is OUT OF BUSINESS.

Some of these snide, rude, arrogant, smug yuppies who believe in screwing people over more than they believe in G*d could use a lesson in humility...

It is not possible to pay 40% on magazines.

AUTHOR: Kim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 01, 2007

I would only pay 40% (of the 50% markdown it's going to receive anyway) on something that would sell almost immediately. Unless it's the book everyone's asking for, or it's something extremely rare and cool, I simply couldn't pay that much. What you got was a "token" offer, meaning they weren't going to make any money off of it, but they were willing to recycle it or donate it.

Re-selling to this business is supposed to be a convienance; otherwise, you could invest more time and effort in a garage sale, selling them online, or giving them to friends.

Please Understand

AUTHOR: Jc - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 18, 2005

Assuming you are talking about Half price Books records an magazines, you need to understan something.
1/)Nowhere does it state that we pay a certain percentace for anything

2) We make offers base opn how well something will sell.

3) If you don't like your offer, don't take it.

Old magazines are useless to almost every store, we take them an recycle them-we don't make ANY money on 99% of the magazines that come in.

Older books are just old books, no matter how many times you've read them. There isn't a store in the chain that doesn't have crap loads of year old, Grisham, Clancy or D. Steel, because everyone buys them and sells them at the same time, they are useless. I garentee, if you look in the clearance sectiom, you will find "books that have only been read one" there for a dollar or less.

I've worked at 4 stores and it is always the same. People don't realize that we donate thousands of books a week of stuff that just doesn't sell. We don;t give the stuff away for tax write-offs either, we hit our limit on the amout that can be deducted around Feb. of each year.

Believe it or not, our job isn't to rip anyone off. Hell, I pay well for good stuff, but alot of the stuff that comes in is crap. If you get a low offer, it just means that you don't have anything that will sell well.
