After only fourteen months the hard drive  went bad on the HP mini 110 I purchased. I am now forced to buy a new computer because it would not be worth the cost or the wait to get a $350 dollar computer fixed when I can by an acer with identical specifications  for only $250 dollars. I expect a computer to last more than 14 months before suffering mechanical failure, a virus would be a different story since the manufacturer has no control over such things, but there is no excuse for manufacturing a product with such unreliable hardware. This computer was a complete waste of money.

I have purchased, HP, IBM, Dell, Gateway, and others, they are have one thing in common.  No matter who makes the hard drive inside, no one can say for certain how long the drive will last.  It may last one day or 10 years.  I have had only a small handful of fail within the first month to first year.  Most of my hard drives have lasted 3-10 years.  I am more than willing to back it up with proof.  The general warranty on many computers is 90 days or 1 year.  It is always a good idea to purchase the extended warranty which adds 2-5 years to the PC and hardware.  The OEM hard drives that are put into the computer are generally only warrantied for 1-3 years depending on the deal between the PC company and the hard drive maker.  If you buy a hard drive from a retail store, your warranty is generally 3-5 years.  The same rule will still apply, even though it is warrantied it can still fail at any time.  Your best bet is to always back up your data as much as possible and/or purchase an external USB hard drive to back up your data onto it if you don't want to pay for the extra warranty.
