Blower motor failed on central AC unit. Technician replaced motor, would not give price or hourly labor fee, or other charges. Used voltmeter to check blower motor, which showed to be faulty as I had originally noted prior to calling! (which he charged a 50.00 diagnostic fee). Charged hourly labor fee while driving back to shop to get part which he didn't have (also charged a trip fee). Again, wouldn't give any prices, stated I would get a bill. Bill I received was not broken down into part and labor charges, just an overall charge of $295.00 (showed a 50.00 diag. charge and a 4.00 trip charge. Friends who work in the HVAC field, state this was overcharged, should have not exceeded $150.00 total. Call to business was unsuccessful in resolving complaint. Complained of bad business practices in not being upfront on costs, no itemization of charges and charging for labor based on a set rate rather than actual labor performed.

Tony the Technician

Tony, if I understand you right the tech replaced your motor, sent you a bill that you think is too high, then you turned around and gave $75 to a parts house for a new motor and replaced it again?

You know Tony part of the cost of that repair is paying for the techs training. Being a medical student I am sure you are familiar with student loans (or do you not plan on paying them back as well?)

Another part of that cost is warranty. Most companies stand behind their work and if your motor fails again soon they fix it for free. You know blower relays have been know to stick and cause a motor failure. Did you also replace the relay Tony? Not a bad investment for about 6 bucks. But your parts guy will probably rape you on that too like he did the motor. He only gave $25 for the motor and charged you $75. How many minutes did it take to make the sale? 5 min? Hey that works out to $600/hr. for him...WOW. I think I will give up hvac contracting and start raping home owners that think they can fix their own stuff.

Not here in Oklahoma

Well Jim,
I don't know how they do things in Massachusetts, but here in Oklahoma, we try to be a little more upfront and honest. I ended up pulling out the blower motor, and replacing it myself with a new motor I bought for $75.00 from a heat and air supply. Since the tech took only about 30-45 minutes to replace the motor, that rakes in a hourly wage of around $250.00-300.00/hr. If that doesn't seem too outrageous to you, maybe I should ditch medical school in favor of being an HVAC man in Mass. ???

Seems Fair

If I were a service tech on a call like yours I would also verify for myself with a volt meter if the blower motor was bad.

295.00 doesn`t seem like a rip off to me,it seems more like your friends don`t know their costs of doing business or they were just guessing.

In the future why don`t you ask one of them to fix it instead.

The tech should have told you up front the price but $295 for a motor change out is not out of line.

This is not a rip off but it could be considered poor practice.
