HomeJoy posts fake reviews on Yelp in order to trick consumers into using their service. Below is documentation of this fraud from Reddit. You can see the Craigslist Ads and correspondance between HomeJoy and the person they were attempting to pay to post the fake reviews.

Here's the actual text:

HomeJoy's Boston page:

www.yelp.com/biz/homejoy-boston now has a "Consumer Alert" message and a link to Yelp's proof of them buying reviews through Craigslist under the guise of seeking food surveys (direct link: http://s3-media4.ak.yelpcdn.com/saphoto/6k6v0n-gsD26wnPvCJZLMg/o.jpg) I called HomeJoy just to poke for fun, guess who answered Sanam Mobin (the person posting the fake reviews). Seems to be their fake secretary. update: You can find them soliciting more reviews here: http://yelp.com/biz/homejoy-philadelphia. They've been banned by Yelp from ever advertising on their platform again and the sponsored by yelp badge is gone to prove it. Dirty business practices.

At least this puts an end to any questions about how bigger competitors are solving the issue of reviews. They got caught here temporarily, but this won't stop them, and I'de take a guess that they're doing this to all their pages. At least a lot fo us know what we're up against.

----------------------------

HomeJoy continues this business practice, and has posted the very same ad they got busted for, on the Toronto Craigslist, as recently as July 2, 2013

Rebuttal to Homejoy's misinformation

AUTHOR: R. S. - ()

POSTED: Thursday, December 05, 2013

I believe that Homejoy is not a platform as they say in their rebuttal.  Simply having technology that allows clients to change schedules does not make a company a platform.  Homejoy markets themselves as a cleaning company, not a booking platform.  Their "employees" wear their company branded uniform.  Booking sites like Sitter City or Home Advisor do not have company uniforms for the people that do the work.  There are many examples of which I can detail if Homejoy wishes to respond.  From what I hear, Homejoy charges $20 per hour because they do not pay workers compensation and they do not withhold payroll taxes.

Response from Homejoy

AUTHOR: Homejoy - ()

POSTED: Monday, November 04, 2013

Homejoy is a platform that connects households with great, high quality professional cleaners. Thousands of clients and professional cleaners have used our online platform and have had amazing experiences. Unfortunately, in April 2013, we discovered one of our hired contractors responsible for helping with marketing efforts was soliciting positive Yelp reviews. This activity was stopped immediately, and the individual involved was let go. We cannot emphasize enough how very sorry we were for this breech in our customer's trust, however, we can promise that safeguards were put in place and this has not, will not, ever happen again. Please note that as a result, many of the allegations above are false as this has not happened since April 2013. We request that the above be removed by the individual who posted as it is not an accurate representation of our platform or company.
