It is with a heavy heart that I have to write this, but after much thought and reflection I have to! My dog Gizmo went onto exploratory surgery and never came home.
I trusted Jacksonville animal hospital to do the right thing, I trusted them.
My dog was throwing up a lot, and so I took him in after around 2 weeks of IV and different antibiotics along with an X-ray, the vet couldn't figure out the problem. They talked about exploratory surgery earlier, but didn't want to put gizmo through it. They never said anything about an ultrasound. I discussed different options, but Gizmos vet said they would cost too much.
Dr Misak suggested exploratory surgery, which I agreed to., per the explanation below: If I knew my dog wasn't coming home, I would have never done it. The surgery was performed on a Sunday, September 15, 2024
Before performing exploratory surgery on an older dog, a vet should conduct a thorough physical exam, review the dog's medical history, potentially perform an ultrasound, and discuss the risks and benefits of surgery with the owner, considering the dog's age and overall health status to assess if surgery is appropriate. Dr Misak HE NEGLECTED TO DO ANY OF THIS! I never agreed that surgery was the only thing for Cancer, I've been into Holistic Medicine my whole Life and Dr. Misak needs new hearing aids!
I trusted this vet with my dog he found supposedly cancer, during the exploratory surgery. The vet took it out(tumor) knowing my dog was too old.(Gizmo was 11) He was just supposed to take a sample. He took it upon himself to take the whole thing! He says he had my permission, but he did not, it's in my dog's records that they can't do anything without my permission! I even called the day before concerned if my dog had enough strength to go through with this, and they never called me back!
If a dog has exploratory surgery and cancer is found, the veterinarian will take tissue samples for biopsy and may recommend additional surgery or other treatments:
Biopsy: The removed tissue is given to a pathologist to diagnose the cancer.
ADDITIONAL SURGERY: If the cancer can be treated with additional surgery, such as removing a tumor, the veterinarian will perform that surgery.
Other treatments: Depending on the type and stage of cancer, other treatments may be recommended, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
Dr Misak took it upon himself to take everything out of my dog, the tumor and some intestines. The vet called and told my son he found a tumor and took it out along with some intestines. He stated that Gizmo was too old and having problems breathing and may not make it, and that he was going to keep him longer. Dr Misak never had permission to take a tumor out of my dog, and he never attempted to call or ask.
I got out of work as soon as I could and drove 40 minutes away to be with and see my dog, he was having problems breathing, and they were doing nothing to help him!!
The vet said it was a rare form of cancer (It wasn't tested, He didn't know this) and nothing could save my dog! They didn't have him on any kind of oxygen during or after surgery!
I am into holistic medicine and know this to not be true! If caught in early stages!
It was very disturbing he had done nothing to help my dog breath, when I got there he was on his last two breaths, he said he gave him a shot of something, and he perked up a bit.
If a dog is having breathing difficulties immediately after surgery, the veterinarian will likely administer oxygen through an endotracheal tube (intubation), which is a flexible tube inserted into the dog's airway to provide direct oxygen supply; this is often already in place during surgery and may need adjustments depending on the situation;
This was not done, he just let my dog die!
After my Gizmo was already gone, the vet says to me, we could have done an ultrasound, but it would have cost just as much! WTH!! At least I would still have my dog and able to look at other options/ and or spend more time with him.
Another disturbing thing was the female vet tech that was there, I walked in and said 3 times he is dead he is dead he is dead. She told me to stop saying that... I was just upset, she was very rude! After my dog's last breath, she stood by his cage and said your dog is an aggressive dog, my Gizmo only weighed 7 pounds. I told her where did you hear that from, he is not a aggressive dog! She told me someone told her that I said really everyone gossiping about my little dog, oh it was in his records somewhere. It doesn't matter if the dog is or not, you don't say that to a dog owner after their beloved pet just passed away
I called the office and told them what the female vet tech had said, and they swept it under the carpet I told them to look at the camera and that she was lying!! They will not give me SOAP records as of today.
Please think twice before taking your animal to do this type of surgery, this total negligence in my eyes! I hope and pray this helps save another animal, regardless it should be the owner's decision! I could have spent more time with my beloved dog, but it was Dr. Misak who made his own decision about my dog! He has been around a long time and should have known better not to take these things upon himself. I trusted the wrong people, this should have never of happened! Maybe he needs to get out! And retire! They won't provide SOAP records
UPDATE: I got the SOAPs notes back and looked at the X-rays, the first set just showed shadows. They took several more x-rays and never told me or showed them to me that showed the mass at the base of his rectum, and they sat on it until it progressed without my knowledge, my dog never needed an ultrasound which he didn't offer because he knew he was lying. Dr, Misak did a surgery that wasn't needed and killed my dog, he lied and said he had permission to take anything out that he found and I did not! This old man needs to be removed! That surgery was unnecessary, everything was in the X-rays that were withheld from me. Everything is about money in this place! Stay away!
