In March 2005, a stray dog was found shot in a small residential community in a suburb of Detroit, MI. The dog was taken to an Emergency Clinic for stabilization and transferred the following morning (Saturday) to the Lincoln Park Veterinary Hospital in Lincoln Park, MI.
Care for the dog was 'contracted' with veterinarian (and hospital owner) Jeff Dizik. A deposit was also given.

Despite the dog having a chest/shoulder wound that shattered the foreleg, creating significant bleeding, the 'business man' stated upfront he only worked a half day this day. His 'business' plan was to give the dog routine vaccinations, a heart worm test, a fecal exam for parasites, and an ear cleaning due to apparent inflammation that was present. The dog would spend the weekend in this hospital and surgery would be performed on Monday morning. Amputation of the foreleg was chosen as the best remedy due to the complexity of the fracture.
During the weekend, there were no laboratory tests to gauge bleeding.

Instead, they used the high tech approach - looking at the bandage for drainage accumulation.
On the morning before surgery, a lab test showed that the hematocrit (indicator of oxygen-carrying red blood cells) was 27%, down from 40% when he first entered the emergency clinic. Normal indicators are 37-55%.
The 'business' man states "there usually isn't a lot of bleeding in this type of surgery".

Surgery was conducted despite this bleeding indicator, with no blood products given or even available for use.
The dog dies in surgery, related to loss of blood. He is cremated prior to written authorization. Cremation was apparently based on a discussion between my fiance (NOT the financially-responsible party listed on the contract for service) and the hospital. My 3 attempts to obtain medical records of his hospitalization are denied.

The 'business man' offers to clear the debt owed if I sign a release of liability claim. I refuse.
I complain to the State and an investigation is performed.

The 'business man' is exonerated, twice, by fellow veterinarians who find he practiced the "minimal standard of care" even though at times it was "less than ideal". The 'business man', perhaps in an attempt to patronize me from further actions against him, dismisses the debt owed.
